Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and President of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), MK Stalin, has expressed his full support for students protesting in New Delhi against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). He stated that abolishing this medical entrance exam is crucial for resolving the issues highlighted by the students. Stalin took to social media platform X to emphasise that the protests have garnered national attention, underscoring their significance.

In his statement, Stalin pointed out that students were among the first to raise concerns that NEET was structured to facilitate “large-scale irregularities”. He reiterated that the DMK has consistently opposed NEET since its inception, drawing attention to the potential dangers posed by the exam to the educational landscape.

Student Protests Capture National Attention

Stalin further highlighted that the ongoing protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar should centre around the demand for NEET’s abolition. He articulated that Tamil Nadu has historically championed social justice and even played a vital role in the First Constitutional Amendment. Asserting that the demand for scrapping NEET is pivotal, he stated that it should be the primary focus of the ongoing protests.

In a quote attributed to him, Stalin declared, “Only scrapping NEET will provide a lasting solution to all these problems,” encapsulating his view on the current situation. He also urged the movement to coalesce around the message “Ban NEET Save Students,” signifying the urgency of the issue at hand.

Increase in Political Response to Protests

The protests, initiated by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on July 20, faced swift police intervention, which has drawn sharp criticism from various opposition leaders. Allegations have surfaced regarding the use of force against protesters, including reports of “lathi-charging” and the deployment of tear gas. This has sparked a broader political reaction, with opposition MPs planning to stage a protest outside the Parliament to call for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

As part of the protest actions, Congress MP Hibi Eiden submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, seeking a discussion regarding the police conduct towards students protesting near Parliament. This motion aims to bring the issue of law enforcement’s response to peaceful protests into the legislative conversation.

Additionally, Nadimul Haque, Chief Whip of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the Rajya Sabha, has submitted a notice under Rule 267 for an immediate discussion during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament regarding the alleged police brutality against students on July 20. The notice requests prompt attention to the matter with the aim of holding accountable those responsible for the actions taken against peaceful demonstrators.
