Meta Partners With Reliance To Build First AI Data Centre In India

The CSR Journal Magazine

Meta has partnered with Reliance Industries to establish its first AI-enabled data centre in India, marking a significant expansion of the social media giant’s infrastructure footprint as competition intensifies in the global artificial intelligence race.

Under the partnership, Reliance will develop a 168-megawatt data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with the facility expected to be completed within the next two years. The project also includes provisions for expanding capacity in the future.

Reliance will provide end-to-end support for the project, including design, construction, utility management, renewable energy supply, network connectivity and managed services.

Strategic Partnership Enters New Phase

The latest announcement builds on the existing relationship between the two companies, which had earlier joined hands to develop AI solutions for enterprises in India and select international markets.

The Jamnagar facility is expected to strengthen Meta’s global computing capabilities while deepening its investment in India, one of its largest markets.

Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani described the partnership as a milestone for India’s digital infrastructure ambitions.

“This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Building India’s first built-to-suit data centre for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution,” Ambani said.

He added that Reliance was committed to creating world-class infrastructure that would support the next generation of AI innovation.

“Jamnagar will become a landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing, and we are proud to partner with Meta to make this vision a reality,” he said.

Meta Bets Bigger On India

Meta founder and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg said the collaboration represented an important step in the company’s efforts to expand its AI infrastructure worldwide.

“We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data centre in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy,” Zuckerberg said.

The move comes as major technology companies across the world race to secure additional computing power to support increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence models and services.

India has emerged as a key market for such investments, driven by its growing digital economy, abundant talent pool and expanding technology ecosystem.

Jamnagar Set To Emerge As AI Infrastructure Hub

The planned facility is expected to position Jamnagar as a major destination for hyperscale AI computing and reinforce India’s ambitions of becoming a global hub for digital infrastructure.

The project also reflects increasing collaboration between global technology companies and Indian conglomerates as demand for AI-related infrastructure accelerates.

Industry experts view the investment as a strong vote of confidence in India’s technological capabilities and regulatory environment, with large-scale AI infrastructure projects likely to play a critical role in supporting future innovation and economic growth.

The partnership further strengthens the strategic ties between Meta and Reliance, which have expanded steadily since Meta’s investment in Jio Platforms in 2020.
