The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has officially unveiled a 30-member shooting team for the 20th Asian Games set to occur in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026. The squad will be spearheaded by double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker, highlighting India’s commitment to achieving success in this discipline.

The shooting events will be held from September 17 to October 3, 2026, at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Range. Following meticulous assessment by the Selection Committee, the final roster has been determined to accommodate the stringent dynamic quota caps enforced by the Games’ Organising Committee. This has resulted in an equal representation of 15 men and 15 women.

In the selection process, athletes underwent rigorous evaluations to ensure optimal competition across various events. This strategic determination aims to bolster India’s chances for medals in both individual and team categories. Notable athletes permitted to compete in multiple disciplines include Vidarsa K. Vinod, Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil, and Esha Singh alongside Manu Bhaker.

Focus on Quality and Depth in Team Selection

The final squad showcases a careful balance between current performance and medal potential, achieved through extensive discussions and analyses by the Selection Committee in collaboration with the High-Performance team. Their goal has been to enhance India’s competitiveness in all shooting disciplines, ultimately aspiring for podium finishes in the upcoming Games.

NRAI President Kalikesh Singh Deo acknowledged the challenge faced during the selection, citing the wealth of talent within Indian shooting. The committee aimed to ensure the nation’s best representation possible across 36 available event slots, taking into account the limited cap of 30 athletes. This thorough approach highlights the depth and versatility present in Indian shooting.

“Given the robust nature of the shooting talent in India today, this final squad embodies a strong and dynamic representation. We trust that this team will compete commendably in Aichi-Nagoya and bring pride to the nation,” remarked Kalikesh Singh Deo.

Composition of the Final Shooting Squad

The assembled contingent includes a significant number of shooters, with 12 focusing on shotgun events and 18 specialising in riflepistol competitions. The breakdown of the squad includes competitive shooters in various disciplines across both men’s and women’s categories.

For rifle and pistol events, key players include Parth Rakesh Mane and Elavenil Valarivan in the 10M Air Rifle Men and Women categories. Other prominent names include Esha Singh and Manu Bhaker, both of whom excel in the air pistol events. The shotgun squad is equally impressive with shooters like Neeru and Kynan Chenai highlighting its strength.

India’s shooting athletes have demonstrated considerable success in international competitions, fortifying the nation’s stature in the sport. The recent ISSF World Cup circuit showcased remarkable performances, including Esha Singh’s world-record win in the women’s 25m pistol event in Munich. Such achievements reflect the consistency and depth of the Indian shooting programme as preparations continue for the Asian Games.
