Maharashtra Implements Zero-Tolerance Policy on Cow Smuggling Ahead of Bakri Eid

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Maharashtra government has declared a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal activities concerning cows as Bakri Eid approaches. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has made it clear that cow smuggling and slaughter will not be tolerated under any circumstances. This statement aligns with directives from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and underscores the state’s commitment to animal welfare.

The minister’s announcement comes as part of an initiative to enhance vigilante measures against the illegal transportation of cows and the operation of unlicensed slaughterhouses. The government’s approach appears to reflect a broader concern for cattle welfare, particularly in the context of cultural sensitivities surrounding the cow in Hindu society.

Inspection Drives to Be Conducted Statewide

“To enforce these measures, starting from May 25 through May 28, all Regional Transport Officers, Deputy Regional Officers, and authorities at border posts have been directed to undertake comprehensive inspections. This initiative includes conducting operations across sensitive routes and major cities including Mumbai,” a release from the Transport Commissioner’s office stated.

Minister Sarnaik noted that there is often a surge in cow smuggling during religious festivals. He raised concerns over the inhumane conditions in which cattle are transported, highlighting issues such as overcrowding and inadequate feeding. The government has committed to taking stringent action against individuals engaged in these activities.

Special checkpoints will particularly focus on ensuring compliance with necessary permissions and animal welfare regulations. Vehicles identified as violating the Motor Vehicles Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act will face immediate confiscation. Minister Sarnaik emphasised that leniency will not be extended to violators, reinforcing the state’s legal framework for animal protection.

Collaboration Among Various Authorities

This operation will involve a coordinated effort among various agencies, including the Transport Department, local and traffic police, the Animal Husbandry Department, and numerous organisations dedicated to cow protection and animal welfare. Special teams have been established to disrupt the supply chain leading to illegal slaughterhouses, marking a collaborative approach to enforcement.

Minister Sarnaik expressed that the protection of cows transcends legal considerations, encompassing aspects of Hindutva identity. He reaffirmed the state’s resolve to safeguard the welfare of animals against mistreatment, indicating that the government will actively resist individuals or groups who engage in animal abuse.

In conclusion, officials have been directed to compile and submit comprehensive reports detailing the actions undertaken throughout this campaign. The government’s ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to animal welfare, cultural values, and strict adherence to relevant laws. As these inspection drives commence, the efficacy of this crackdown on illegal practices will become clearer in the coming days.
