Maharashtra’s Public Works Minister, Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale, conducted an on-site evaluation of the historic Air India Building located at Nariman Point, Mumbai, following its recent transfer to the state government. This inspection took place on June 4, 2026, where the Minister gave pertinent directives to officials responsible for the site. His focus was on ensuring that all necessary assessments and plans are in place for the future of the building.

During the visit, Bhosale mandated a full structural audit before any governmental offices are relocated to the building. He emphasised the importance of addressing all essential structural repairs prior to initiating interior development and renovation initiatives. The Minister made it clear that quality should not be compromised, urging officials to employ rigorous standards for durability and reliability in all ongoing work.

Focus on Quality and Heritage

The Minister also underscored the need for using high-grade materials for electrical systems, fittings, and various technical infrastructures within the building. He expressed a desire to redesign the main entrance and facade in a manner that reflects the rich heritage and prestige of Maharashtra. Bhosale suggested seeking advice from distinguished architects and expert institutions across the nation to achieve this vision.

In Bhosale’s view, the safety, convenience, and accessibility of citizens visiting Mumbai for government matters are paramount. He instructed the officials to ensure that all renovation tasks are expedited and meet the highest quality standards. All work must be completed within the specified deadlines to enhance the public service experience.

On the occasion, Bhosale noted that the transfer of the Air India Building to the Government of Maharashtra signifies a pivotal moment in enhancing the state’s administrative framework. The Minister reiterated his commitment to quality repairs and sustainable development, aiming to transform this iconic structure into a model government complex.

Strategically Acquired Property

The building’s acquisition was approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet on September 8, 2023, and was concluded after all necessary administrative processes were completed. The property, procured from Air India Asset Holding Limited (AIAHL) for Rs 1,601 crore, officially came under the Government of Maharashtra’s jurisdiction on June 2, 2026. This acquisition was facilitated by the Public Works Department, which undertook the required financial formalities.

Minister Bhosale further instructed that immediate administrative approvals be granted for the planned repair and renovation works. The expectation is that this historic edifice will provide spacious, modern, and well-equipped office environments for various departments, thereby improving administrative efficiency within the government.

During the inspection, Bhosale was accompanied by key officials, including Public Works Department Secretary (Roads) Abasaheb Nagargoje and Chief Engineer Pragnya Walke. These officials briefed the Minister on the current state of the building, the repairs required, and the proposed renovation plans moving forward.
