Maharashtra Government Considers Satellite Phone Connectivity for Deep-Sea Fishermen

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Maharashtra government is considering introducing satellite phone connectivity for deep-sea fishermen to ensure uninterrupted communication with the shore, particularly during emergencies in offshore areas where conventional mobile networks are unavailable.

The Fisheries Department is holding discussions with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to assess the feasibility of the proposal, Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane said on Tuesday.

Government Reviews BSNL Satellite Phone Service

According to a statement issued by the minister’s office, the Fisheries Department reviewed BSNL’s Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS), including its coverage, technical capabilities and suitability for communication in remote offshore regions.

The proposal is aimed at addressing communication gaps faced by fishermen operating beyond the reach of conventional mobile networks.

Satellite Phones To Support Emergency Response

Rane said ensuring the safety and livelihood of fishermen remains a priority for the state government, noting that the absence of mobile connectivity in deep-sea areas often creates difficulties during emergencies.

“Satellite phones can serve as a lifeline for fishermen by enabling uninterrupted communication with the shore. The government is positive about introducing this facility in coordination with BSNL, which will strengthen maritime safety, rescue operations and communication,” he said.

According to the minister, the service would enable fishermen to seek immediate assistance during adverse weather conditions, mechanical failures, medical emergencies and other crises while operating in remote waters.

Initiative Aims To Strengthen Maritime Safety

Officials said continuous communication between fishing vessels and authorities on shore would improve the effectiveness of rescue operations by enabling faster emergency responses.

The proposal forms part of the Maharashtra government’s broader efforts to improve safety standards in the fisheries sector through the use of modern technology.

Under its “Fishermen Safety First” policy, the state is pursuing measures aimed at enhancing maritime safety and modernising the fisheries sector.

If implemented, the satellite phone service is expected to significantly improve communication for deep-sea fishermen, helping reduce risks at sea and strengthening emergency preparedness along Maharashtra’s coastline.
