Madhya Pradesh Installs Scrap-Built Mist Towers To Combat Heatwave In Dewas

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Madhya Pradesh Municipal Corporation has set up mist towers in Dewas, constructed from scrap steel pipes and old motors, to provide relief from high temperatures and dust for passers-by. This initiative aims to deliver immediate comfort to commuters confronted with rising heat levels. According to Dalip Kumar, the Commissioner of Nagar Nigam Dewas, the location at Bhopal Chauraha experiences significant traffic congestion, making it a focal point for air quality improvement and temperature regulation.

Kumar indicated that the newly installed mist tower delivers relief within a radius of approximately 2 to 2.5 metres. The system operates using minimal water, with only three to four litres being consumed. A sprinkler system has also been integrated at the Chauraha for optimal functionality. The regular water supply enables the mist tower to operate effectively, although it may temporarily cease operation on occasion.

In addition to the Chauraha, similar sprinklers and mist towers are being proposed for Indira Gandhi Square and the Civil Line intersection. The public has reportedly responded positively to these installations, which are part of the overall strategy to manage the heat and dust in urban areas.

Heatwave Alerts Across Madhya Pradesh

As summer temperatures continue to escalate, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings concerning ongoing heatwave conditions throughout several districts in both Eastern and Western Madhya Pradesh. The alerts are particularly aimed at daily wage workers, the elderly, and school-aged children, who are at a heightened risk of severe dehydration.

According to the IMD, cities including Raisen, Vidisha, Sehore, Hoshangabad, Jabalpur, Satna, and Chhindwara are currently facing extreme heat stress. The department has urged residents to limit outdoor activities, particularly during the peak hours of sunlight to mitigate health risks.

The advise from the IMD comes in light of a harsh heatwave impacting various regions of the country. This has likely intensified the need for municipal efforts like the mist towers in Dewas, underscoring a proactive response to address temperature-related challenges.

Government Review of Disaster Management Strategies

In a related context, Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level review meeting in New Delhi on May 14, 2023, to assess India’s preparedness for potential flooding and heatwave scenarios. This meeting focused on enhancing disaster management strategies, including the enhancement of flood forecasting and early warning systems through advanced technology.

Discussions during the meeting highlighted the necessity for improved readiness to manage concurrent disasters, particularly the dual issues of floods and heatwaves that impact at-risk areas across the nation. Emphasis was placed on community awareness and capacity-building initiatives aimed at fostering local resilience to minimise loss of life and property during severe weather occurrences.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the essential supply of relief materials and the importance of medical preparedness in responding to emergencies. For future initiatives, a mandatory rest period for all labourers has been proposed, ensuring breaks between 1 PM and 4 PM to mitigate exposure to hazardous UV radiation during peak hours.
