Macron Backs US-Iran Deal, Says Russia Shows No Serious Will for Peace

The CSR Journal Magazine

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday called for restraint in West Asia and voiced support for the emerging agreement between the United States and Iran, saying renewed fighting involving Iran, Hezbollah and Israel must be avoided. He also said Russia was not demonstrating a genuine willingness to pursue peace in Ukraine.

Speaking at the conclusion of the G7 Summit in Évian, France, Macron highlighted what he described as a positive shift in Washington’s approach towards the war in Ukraine and welcomed renewed US commitments to supporting Kyiv in coordination with European allies.

Macron Calls for Stability in West Asia

Addressing developments in the Middle East, Macron stressed the need to prevent a return to hostilities and backed the agreement announced between Washington and Tehran.

According to CNN, the French President said Iran, Hezbollah and Israel should not resume fighting and underscored the importance of preserving regional stability.

Macron’s remarks came as G7 leaders welcomed the US-Iran agreement, describing it as an opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and address concerns related to its regional activities and ballistic programme.

“We welcome the announcement of a deal between the United States and Iran, secured under the strong leadership of President Trump,” the G7 declaration stated.

Macron Questions Russia’s Commitment to Peace

Turning to the conflict in Ukraine, Macron said US President Donald Trump and other G7 leaders shared the assessment that Moscow was not currently showing a serious desire to end the war.

“President Trump, like the rest of us, has simply taken note that there is no serious will on Russia’s side today for peace,” Macron said, according to CNN.

The French President also pointed to what he described as a significant change in the United States’ approach to the conflict, saying Washington had shown a greater willingness to coordinate with European allies in supporting Ukraine.

He said the latest developments represented a positive step for transatlantic cooperation and highlighted the importance of maintaining Western unity in response to Russia’s invasion.

Expressing confidence in President Trump, Macron said he welcomed the latest commitments made by Washington.

“Today, the United States of America has made a commitment. That’s very important,” Macron said, as cited by CNN.

G7 Pledges Continued Support for Ukraine

In a joint declaration, G7 leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and announced further assistance aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s defence capabilities.

“We, the Leaders of the G7, stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” the declaration stated.

The leaders agreed to increase deliveries of air defence systems, interceptors and long-range capabilities while exploring licensing arrangements to boost Ukraine’s domestic military production.

They also pledged additional support to strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience ahead of winter and vowed to intensify pressure on Russia through stronger sanctions, including measures targeting the oil and gas sectors.

Besides Ukraine and West Asia, the G7 leaders called for greater cooperation on Indo-Pacific security, energy resilience and supply chain stability during the 52nd G7 Summit in France.
