Shreyas Iyer Reaches 5,000 International Runs, Abhishek Sharma Hits 100 T20I Sixes

Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer marked a significant achievement by scoring 5,000 international runs during the first T20I against England at Chester-le-Street. In this match, held on July 2, Iyer made a notable contribution of 68 runs off 47 balls, featuring six boundaries and one six, with a strike rate exceeding 144. Across 147 matches for India, he has accumulated a total of 5,031 runs, maintaining an average of 39.61 and a strike rate of 96.06. His record also includes six centuries and 37 fifties, with a career best score of 128 not out.

In his Test career, Iyer has played 14 matches and scored 811 runs over 24 innings, achieving an average of 36.86, which includes one century and five fifties, with a best score of 105. In ODIs, he has recorded five centuries and 23 fifties, with a strike rate of 98.60 and a top score of 128 not out. Iyer’s T20I contributions include 1,184 runs in 54 matches, with an average of 30.38, nine fifties, and a highest score of 74 not out.

Abhishek Sharma Attains 100 T20I Sixes

In a remarkable performance, Abhishek Sharma also achieved a milestone during the same match. He became the fastest player from a Test-playing nation to reach 100 sixes in T20 internationals, beating West Indies’ Evin Lewis, having done so in just 785 balls compared to Lewis’s 789 balls. Sharma scored an explosive 59 runs off 24 deliveries, hitting six fours and four sixes, resulting in a strike rate over 245. His tally of T20I sixes now stands at 102.

Match Summary and Weather Disruption

India’s innings were bolstered by strong performances from both Iyer and Sharma, along with a swift cameo from Shivam Dube, who scored 42 runs off 21 balls, including two fours and three sixes. This collective effort led India to a total of 189 runs for 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. However, the match was declared a no result as rain prevented England from batting. The next T20I between the two teams is scheduled to take place in Manchester on July 4.
