Kolkata Police Officer Arrested in Mumbai on Rape Charges

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Sub-Inspector from a police station in Birbhum district, West Bengal, was arrested in Mumbai in connection with an alleged rape case involving a woman at a guest house in Salt Lake, near Kolkata. The accused, Ajmal Haque, reportedly took the woman to the guest house situated in CL Block, where she alleges that he raped her. Authorities received a written complaint from the victim last month, prompting an investigation into the incident.

Following the complaint, the Bidhannagar East Police initiated a search to locate the accused officer, who allegedly had previously been granted bail related to the same case. Subsequent to the involvement of investigators from the Birbhum district police, Haque reportedly went into hiding.

A police team received a tip-off regarding Haque’s location and successfully traced him to Mumbai, leading to his arrest on Monday. After his arrest, he appeared before a local court in Mumbai, from where he was subsequently remanded and transported back to Kolkata.

Haque is set to appear before the Bidhannagar Court on Tuesday, where police will likely seek his custody for extended questioning as they delve deeper into the allegations. Investigators are actively probing the specific circumstances surrounding the reported incident.

Anti-Corruption Bureau Arrests Another Sub-Inspector

In an unrelated matter, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) made another arrest on the same day, apprehending a Sub-Inspector named Subrata Sarkar in Howrah district of West Bengal. Sarkar allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 15,000 in exchange for not arresting a suspect involved in a case under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a woman.

The ACB commenced an investigation in response to a complaint against Sarkar, and subsequently set up a trap to apprehend him accepting the bribe. During the operation, a chemical substance was applied to the banknotes involved, allowing for the identification of the bribe when Sarkar’s hands were washed, resulting in a change of colour.

The money was seized from Sarkar at the time of the arrest, after which legal procedures were initiated to process the case against him. This incident highlights ongoing issues regarding corruption within law enforcement agencies in the region.

Investigation into Illegal Blood Sale Network

Additionally, the ACB arrested a middleman named Shahabuddin Mallick, who is alleged to have been involved in the illegal procurement and sale of blood from a blood bank situated in Panskura. This operation raises concerns about the integrity of health services and the potential exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

Investigators are currently concerned with probing the broader network associated with the illegal blood collection and sales. Efforts are being made to determine the involvement of any employees from the blood bank in this purported racket. This investigation underscores the ACB’s commitment to fighting corruption and illegal practices across various sectors.

As these cases unfold, both the Bidhannagar and Howrah police are under scrutiny, with ongoing investigations aimed at ensuring accountability and justice.
