Rajesh Dharmani, the Technical Education Minister of Himachal Pradesh, has urged the central government to establish a national pharmaceutical education and research institute in the state. He emphasised the need for Himachal Pradesh to transition its pharmaceutical sector from a focus on generic medicines to one that prioritises research and innovation. Dharmani made this appeal during a recent interview in Shimla, highlighting the state’s growing prominence in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

In a meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda in New Delhi, Dharmani presented his request for a premier institution dedicated to pharmaceutical education and research. “Establishing such an institute will greatly benefit our state. Since pharmacy colleges fall under my department, this initiative aligns well with our objectives,” he stated.

According to Dharmani, while Himachal Pradesh has established itself as a significant player in the pharmaceutical industry, there is an urgent need for investment in research and development. He articulated the importance of moving beyond generic medicines to create innovative formulations and treatments.

Concerns Over Allegations Against DGP

In addition to his advocacy for a new educational institution, Dharmani questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding their allegations involving the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Manav Bharti University fake degree scam. He raised concerns over why such information was reportedly withheld if senior party members were aware of the issue.

“If they possessed information regarding the fake degree scandal involving many people, why was it not brought to light earlier? This should have been addressed publicly,” he remarked. Dharmani suggested that the BJP’s motives might be rooted in sensationalism rather than genuine concern.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to transparency, he expressed the need for a thorough investigation into the allegations and affirmed that the state administration would address any violations while dismissing claims of political vendetta against the opposition.

Enhancements in Technical Education

Furthermore, Dharmani elaborated on initiatives within the Technical Education Department aimed at redirecting resources for student welfare. He emphasised that funds previously spent on non-essential purchases would now be allocated to support students directly.

“Upon assuming his role as minister, he discovered that funds meant for student development were being misused, which led to the introduction of strict guidelines ensuring all expenditures focus on student needs. Recent efforts included organising an overseas exposure visit for Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students, providing them with their first flight experience.

Envisioning continued support, he announced plans for 35 engineering students to visit Japan, complementing the objective of sending teachers abroad for exposure to global educational practices. “By enhancing teacher capabilities, we aim to improve student outcomes,” he elaborated.

Commitment to Environmental Conservation

On the issue of sustainable development, the minister highlighted the state cabinet’s decision to regulate construction in ecologically sensitive areas. He reiterated the importance of balancing development initiatives with environmental preservation in Himachal Pradesh.

“Maintaining our mountains, forests, and natural landscapes is fundamental to our identity. While development is necessary, we must also protect our natural beauty for future generations,” Dharmani stated.

To further promote environmental initiatives, he mentioned the role of local panchayats in enhancing green cover, particularly through plantation drives under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana. In conclusion, he reassured the public that the government’s actions against any law violations are not borne of political revenge but a necessary commitment to upholding the law.
