The CSR Journal Magazine

Keralam’s Chief Minister, VD Satheeshan, initiated an anti-drug awareness rally in Thiruvananthapuram on June 26, coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This event aims to combat increasing drug-related issues in the state and heighten public awareness surrounding drug abuse. The Chief Minister’s commitment reflects a broader strategy to address the growing concerns posed by drug trafficking.

Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt Launched

The Keralam government has recently implemented ‘Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt’ in collaboration with the Health and Excise departments. This operation aims to dismantle the drug networks operating within the state, targeting the roots of the drug menace. Excise and Cooperation Minister M Liju reported that this initiative aligns with the government’s goal of eliminating the pervasive drug problems affecting communities.

Official sources indicated that the Excise department has recorded approximately 15,000 cases related to drug offences within the last month, indicating a remarkable enforcement effort. Additionally, the launch of India’s first portal for narcotics information represents a significant step forward in public engagement and awareness, enabling citizens to access vital data related to drug abuse and registration for de-addiction services.

Drug-related cases in Keralam have seen a stark rise, with police records showing 36,314 cases filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2025. This rate marks an increase from 27,530 cases in 2024, illustrating the pressing need for stringent measures in combating drug trafficking and abuse.

Government’s Commitment to Combat Drug Abuse

Union Minister Amit Shah also acknowledged the urgency of addressing drug-related issues during the observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse. He reiterated the government’s determination to protect Indian youth from the dangers posed by narcotics. Shah expressed that there is a steadfast commitment to creating a safer environment while showing compassion for those impacted by drug abuse.

In a statement on social media platform X, Shah highlighted the government’s strong stance against drug cartels under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasised the necessity of fighting against drug abuse both effectively and empathetically, aiming to provide proper care to those affected. His remarks aimed to encourage public support for the fight against drugs nationwide.

Amid these efforts, the Home Minister chaired the 10th Apex-Level Meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) in New Delhi. This meeting reinforced the government’s ‘zero tolerance policy’ towards drug trafficking, a stance prominently promoted by the Prime Minister. Such initiatives underline the collaborative approach taken by national and state authorities in tackling the growing drug crisis across India.
