Kerala has witnessed a significant increase in snakebite incidents in recent days, coinciding with the ongoing heatwave in the state. At least six fatalities related to snakebites have been documented in various locations throughout Kerala over the past week. These incidents have heightened public concern over the safety and health risks posed by such events.

On April 19, two brothers were bitten by a common krait at their residence in Thrissur. Tragically, the younger brother succumbed to his injuries, while the elder sibling is currently receiving medical treatment. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, given the alarming rise in snake sightings.

In a separate incident, a household in Kuttiady, situated in the Kozhikode district, reported finding five venomous snakes, again identified as common kraits. These snakes were discovered in the home of a man named Rameshan, with one being located in a room where young children were sleeping, underscoring the pervasive risk.

Health Department Responds with Guidelines

In light of the increasing number of snakebite cases, the Kerala health department has released a set of guidelines aimed at mitigating risks. Health Minister Veena George pointed out the correlation between heightened snake activity and extreme temperatures, which force these reptiles to seek cooler areas, including residential homes.

Minister George emphasised that timely first aid and immediate medical care are crucial for saving lives. She reminded the public that anti-snake venom is readily available at all hospitals starting from the taluka level, enhancing the prospects for effective treatment following a snakebite incident.

The minister urged medical institutions to adhere strictly to established protocols when providing treatment, which should be guided by observed symptoms and laboratory tests. This adherence is vital for the proper management of snakebite cases, which can often lead to serious complications if not addressed promptly.

Precautionary Measures Recommended by Authorities

In order to decrease the frequency of snake encounters, authorities have recommended several precautionary measures for residents. Citizens are advised to keep doors and windows shut and seal any gaps that might allow snakes to enter their homes. This proactive approach is crucial during the hot months when snake sightings are prevalent.

It is also recommended that individuals avoid sleeping outdoors or directly on the ground; instead, using beds with mosquito nets can provide an additional layer of protection. Maintaining a clean environment by removing garbage and trimming overgrown grass and bushes can further discourage snakes from making residential areas their habitat.

Other suggested measures include not storing firewood, husks, or clothing close to the house and ensuring adequate lighting both inside and outside during the night. People are advised to use a torch when leaving home after dark and to wear protective footwear while walking through bushy areas.

If an individual spots a snake, they are advised not to attempt to catch or kill it; instead, it is recommended to report the sighting or use the Sarpa app designed for such instances. By following these guidelines, residents can help reduce the risk of snakebite incidents during this vulnerable period.
