Kejriwal Urges Against Crackdown on Youth Amid Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has alleged that the internet has been “shut down” around Jantar Mantar, where protests are being held to demand the resignation of the Education Minister due to a recent paper leak controversy. In a video message shared on X, he expressed concern over reports of heightened security in the vicinity. Kejriwal noted that various sources, including journalists, have highlighted the situation, indicating that a large presence of security and paramilitary forces has been deployed in the area.

During his address, he raised questions about the possibility of a significant crackdown occurring later in the evening at Jantar Mantar and its surrounding areas. Kejriwal appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cautioning against any attempts to suppress the protests. He referenced a past incident involving activist Sonam Wangchuk, suggesting that attempts to disband the protest had only intensified it.

Protests Escalate Following Police Actions

Kejriwal reflected on the police’s use of force during a recent Parliament march, stating that such measures had failed to intimidate the demonstrators. He accused authorities of trying to instil fear through actions like lathi-charges and the use of tear gas. Instead, he claimed that these tactics have only galvanised the growing protests. According to Kejriwal, the youth participating in the demonstrations are part of the “Gen-Z generation,” who remain undeterred by such tactics, underscoring the resilience of the protesters.

Emphasising the spirit of the young protesters, Kejriwal remarked that attempts to suppress their voices would likely result in a larger movement. He asserted that the more oppressive the attempts to control them, the greater their resolve would become. The AAP leader strongly urged that there should be no form of crackdown on the youth who are advocating for their rights.

These ongoing protests come after a series of confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement. Reports indicate that tensions flared during a recent assembly in Connaught Place, where violence broke out, resulting in injuries to several police personnel. Kejriwal’s remarks highlight his continued support for the protesters amidst escalating tensions.

Injuries Amid Protest Violence

Following the violent escalation, authorities reported that the situation has been stabilised. Police officials confirmed that peace has returned to the area after the initial outbreak of hostilities. The ongoing tensions underscore the complexities surrounding these protests as activists continue to push for accountability from government authorities.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on a hunger strike, has made his demands clear regarding the protests. He reiterated the necessity for assurances of no legal action against demonstrators as a condition to conclude his strike, further adding to the discourse surrounding the protests and law enforcement’s response.
