Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has emphasised the importance of directing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds towards primary education. During the Global CSR and Sustainability Summit 2026 in Bengaluru, he encouraged companies to collaborate with government schools to enhance educational infrastructure and improve learning outcomes statewide.

Shivakumar highlighted that the state government plans to create a dedicated monitoring system to oversee CSR initiatives, ensuring effective execution throughout Karnataka. He noted the significance of corporate involvement in societal progress, mentioning that nearly 10,000 CSR projects are currently active in the state.

The Chief Minister stated that accurate monitoring would foster transparency and accountability, with a new team established to evaluate the impacts of CSR activities on local communities. This initiative aims to ensure that CSR delivers measurable and meaningful social results beyond mere financial contributions.

Primary Education as a Focus Area

Mainly focusing on primary education, Shivakumar urged businesses to support government schools actively. He encouraged initiatives to upgrade classrooms, improve learning facilities, and provide skilled professionals to enhance educational quality in the state.

Praising the initiatives already taken by companies like Toyota, he called for more businesses to engage in school development efforts. According to the Chief Minister, CSR efforts should involve not only building infrastructure but also contribute to the growth of human capital through improved educational quality.

Shivakumar further suggested that CSR should be perceived as a long-term investment in sustainable development, rather than merely a charitable commitment. He acknowledged former Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s role in establishing the CSR framework in India, which has enabled substantial contributions towards social development from companies nationwide.

Karnataka’s Education and Technological Landscape

In his address, Shivakumar presented Karnataka as a hub for education and innovation, citing impressive statistics about healthcare and technology. The state produces approximately 13,900 doctors annually and around 1 lakh healthcare professionals each year, in addition to hosting an information technology sector that employs nearly 26 lakh individuals.

He stressed that Karnataka’s robust educational framework has significantly contributed to attracting global investments and establishing Bengaluru as India’s technological centre. Nonetheless, he initiated a call to action for the expansion of quality educational opportunities beyond Bengaluru, ensuring that students in rural areas have access to high-quality schools closer to home.

The Chief Minister acknowledged the critical role played by industrial centres like Electronics City and International Tech Park Bengaluru (ITPL) in propelling Karnataka’s economic development. He also recognised the contributions of organisations such as the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) towards the state’s industrial growth.

Future Directions and Economic Growth

Concluding his speech, Shivakumar addressed the transformative impact of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), on various industries and society as a whole. He underscored the necessity of continuous investments in education, skill enhancement, sustainability, and human capital development to maintain Karnataka’s economic advantages.

He outlined the importance of ensuring inclusive growth across the state, emphasising the need for investments that not only drive economic progress but also benefit all segments of society. This commitment to education and professional skill development aims to reinforce Karnataka’s leadership position in India’s dynamic economy.
