Jhandu Kumar Wins Bronze Medal for India at 2026 Commonwealth Games

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s journey at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has begun on a remarkable note, thanks to Jhandu Kumar, a 29-year-old para powerlifter from Bihar. Kumar clinched a bronze medal in the Men’s Heavyweight Para Powerlifting event, marking the country’s first medal at this edition of the Games. His achievement not only showcases his athletic prowess but also highlights a story of resilience and determination, emerging from humble beginnings as the son of a roadside vegetable vendor.

Earlier in the day, Indian athlete Andrew suffered a disappointing fourth-place finish in the men’s lightweight category. However, Jhandu’s performance quickly transformed despair into celebration. Competing against formidable opponents, he executed a strategy that defied the odds, particularly against the competition’s higher body-weight lifters.

Jhandu’s Compelling Performance

Jhandu’s campaign began with assurance, as he confidently lifted 190 kg to position himself at the top of the leaderboard midway through the competition. Despite falling short of his personal best, his 130.9 points created an atmosphere of anticipation, putting pressure on his rivals to respond. His final attempt at lifting 196 kg may not have been successful, but his earlier achievement ensured he remained a strong contender.

As the heavier lifters from Group A came into play, Jhandu’s score proved challenging to surpass. Nigeria’s Riluwan Idris ultimately secured the gold medal with a lift of 208 kg, while England’s Matthew Harding took silver with 199 kg. Jhandu’s performance remained steadfast, ensuring him the bronze medal, making him one of only three lifters to exceed the 130-point mark during the competition.

In the backdrop, India’s Sudhir faced disqualification due to doping allegations, which further emphasised the high stakes and intense competition present in the event. Nonetheless, Jhandu’s remarkable journey continued to shine brightly amidst these challenges.

The Journey of Jhandu Kumar

Jhandu Kumar has overcome considerable obstacles to reach this milestone in his athletics career. Born in Harnaut, Bihar, he has battled the effects of polio throughout his life. Growing up in a family that faced economic difficulties, he assisted his father in selling vegetables and later turned to driving an e-rickshaw for additional income during the pandemic.

His introduction to competitive sports began in 2017 when he ventured into para athletics, securing various district and state medals in events such as shot put and discus throw. However, a newfound passion for powerlifting led him to shift his focus entirely to this discipline. Despite initial setbacks at the National Championship, including a failed lift, he caught the attention of Paralympic bronze medallist Rajinder Singh Rahelu.

Under Rahelu’s guidance at the SAI National Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar, Jhandu’s career flourished. He rapidly became a leading lifter in his category, setting national records and achieving multiple podium finishes at international events. His bronze medal at the 2025 Beijing World Cup and at the 2026 Asian & Oceania Championships laid the groundwork for his historic win at the Commonwealth Games.

With this significant achievement, Kumar has not only added a medal to India’s tally but has also set his aspirations high for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, where he aims to further represent his country on a global stage.
