TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah apologise to student protesters, following recent remarks made by the Prime Minister regarding the language used by the demonstrators. Ghose’s comments, made on August 3, highlight her assertion that it is the government that should accept responsibility for the actions taken against the protesting youth. This comes in light of growing discontent among student groups concerning exam irregularities.

Expressing her views to ANI, Ghose stated that while the Prime Minister suggested forgiveness for the protesting students, it is the leaders who should seek forgiveness instead. She emphasised that the focus should be on the accountability of the government in relation to the police crackdown on demonstrators in Delhi.

Opposition Intensifies Protests Against Police Action

The call for accountability has sparked intensified protests from opposition parties, including the newly formed INDIA bloc. In the days leading to Ghose’s statements, several opposition leaders have voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the government’s treatment of student protests. Notably, on the same day, opposition members staged demonstrations at the Parliament, demanding Amit Shah’s presence to answer questions about various issues, particularly the police’s actions during protests related to exam irregularities.

Demonstrations included the gathering of prominent opposition figures such as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The members conveyed their dissent through a large banner asking, “Why is Amit Shah absent in Parliament?” This display reflected a broader frustration with the Home Minister’s lack of engagement on pressing concerns.

Amid these protests, slogans calling for Shah to respond to the opposition’s queries echoed throughout the premises, including chants of “Amit Shah, answer” and “Where has Amit Shah disappeared?”. The demand for accountability is expected to be a significant focus in the coming days, particularly regarding the events of July 20, when police actions were heavily scrutinised.

Parliament Session Amid Growing Tensions

The current Monsoon Session of Parliament has entered its eleventh day, coinciding with these demonstrations and discussions. Speculation surrounds the introduction of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill, which is anticipated to lead to further debate and possible tensions between the ruling party and opposition benches. The political atmosphere remains charged as the opposition aims to leverage their demands for clarity and accountability from the government.

Additionally, the timing of these protests aligns with emerging controversies, such as allegations regarding the theft of donations intended for the Ram Mandir. Recent remarks by Purnea MP Pappu Yadav, who imitated a priest while criticising the government over these matters, have further inflamed the situation. Yadav’s actions were highlighted following an alleged attack on him in the capital, which added another layer of complexity to the ongoing discussions surrounding government accountability and transparency.

As these events unfold, opposition members remain steadfast in their demands for a formal response from Home Minister Amit Shah. The continuing protests against police actions demonstrate the heightened tensions between the ruling government and opposition parties, with both sides preparing for further exchanges in the Parliament sessions ahead.
