Jairam Ramesh, a senior Congress leader, has stated that the current Monsoon Session of Parliament will be rendered ineffective if the government continues to dismiss calls for discussions regarding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and police actions against student protesters. Ramesh has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address these issues in Parliament.

After a protest involving various Opposition leaders in New Delhi, Ramesh emphasised the need for accountability and transparency regarding the examination controversy and alleged police brutality. He remarked that the unity displayed by opposition parties is a clear reflection of their growing apprehensions about the government’s handling of the situation.

Ramesh further highlighted the urgency of the matter by stating that if the current mindset of the government persists, Parliament’s proceedings will be severely affected. He demanded that discussions encompass the examination system, the educational framework, and the alleged misconduct of the Delhi Police towards the students during protests.

Solidarity Among Opposition Parties

Manoj Jha, a Member of Parliament from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), supported Ramesh’s sentiments, describing the student protests as an organic and widespread public mobilisation rather than a result of political manoeuvring. Jha expressed disbelief at the spontaneous nature of the protests, calling it an authentic challenge to the ruling establishment.

He conveyed that the current situation is unprecedented, noting that he has not observed such a natural and compelling gathering of citizens in his two decades of activism. By calling attention to the need for accountability, Jha underscored the significance of listening to public outcry against perceived injustices.

Jha’s support of the protests underlines the growing discontent among the populace, as evidenced by the large turnout of students and supporters at various demonstrations across the country.

Detentions Amid Growing Protests

The context of the protests has been marked by significant tensions, particularly following incidents on the evening of July 20, when prominent Congress figures such as Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were apprehended by Delhi Police while protesting near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence. This resulted from their march demanding accountability over the NEET-UG 2026 controversy and calling for concrete action against police conduct.

During the protests, Congress leaders voiced strong criticisms of the government’s management of the situation, reaffirming their demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. As law enforcement began to disperse demonstrators, several party members were detained, escalating the political tension surrounding the issue.

The clashes between police and protesters have ignited what many have dubbed a political storm, leading to repeated interruptions in Parliament sessions. Both houses have faced disruptions, primarily due to ongoing demands by the Opposition for dialogue on the unfolding circumstances.

Government’s Response and Future Actions

Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, has countered the Opposition’s claims, accusing Rahul Gandhi of altering his stance following the government’s agreement to address issues related to NEET and the protests. Singh asserted that Gandhi’s insistence on additional conditions, including the Education Minister’s resignation, hindered progress in discussions.

The Congress party, however, continues to hold firm on its position, insisting that the government take responsibility for the NEET paper leak and address allegations of wrongful police behaviour against student demonstrators. The party has indicated a commitment to maintaining both in-house and public protests until their demands are satisfactorily met.

This ongoing saga highlights the tensions between the government and Opposition, with both sides preparing for continued confrontations as they seek to assert their respective positions on educational integrity and public safety.
