In anticipation of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, New Delhi has welcomed several prominent foreign dignitaries. The arrivals, which occurred on May 14, signify India’s expanding diplomatic ties with various nations across Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Among the leaders present were Foreign Minister of Iran Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, and Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla. Additionally, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang from Vietnam also arrived in the Indian capital.

Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Mohamad bin Haji Hasan and the UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar were also among the high-profile attendees, indicating a broad representation from each member country.

Focus on International Diplomacy and Current Global Challenges

The BRICS meeting, which is set to take place from May 14 to 15, positions New Delhi at the forefront of international diplomacy during a time of heightened global tensions. The gathering will address significant divisions related to the ongoing West Asia conflict, posing challenges for collective diplomatic efforts.

This two-day session will be chaired by India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and will test the grouping’s capability to forge a consolidated stance amid increasing geopolitical divides that threaten international stability.

Officials aim to create a platform for ministers and senior representatives from BRICS member and partner nations to align their strategic interests and engage in meaningful dialogue about pressing global and regional issues. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to meet the visiting delegations, highlighting the importance India places on this event.

Anticipated Discussions on Global Cooperation and Reform

The agenda for this summit will include thorough discussions on various topics, such as security challenges, economic collaboration, and the need for multilateral reform. This gathering offers a rare opportunity for these diverse nations to share insights and develop coordinated responses to complex global issues.

Additionally, the second day will pivot towards a long-term strategic vision, featuring a session titled “BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This forward-looking agenda aims to stimulate dialogue on revitalising multilateral governance structures.

The BRICS bloc has recently expanded in both scope and influence, welcoming new members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE into its fold. By hosting this expanded group, New Delhi aims to cultivate a unified voice capable of addressing systemic inequities in the global order.

This meeting not only serves to reinforce the bloc’s status as a cornerstone of the Global South but also represents an opportunity to steer efforts towards a more equitable global framework while managing the internal dynamics of an increasingly diverse geopolitical entity.
