iPhone 17 Supply Shortage Hits India, Expected Price Increase Looms

The CSR Journal Magazine

The supply of the iPhone 17 is reportedly running low in India, causing considerable concern among consumers looking to make purchases. Dealers have stated that fresh stock has not arrived in recent weeks, leaving both online and offline channels struggling to maintain availability. Many prominent e-commerce platforms have listed the gadget as out of stock, while physical retailers report limited supplies. This shortage has also affected the official Apple Store in Noida, which is currently unable to provide the device.

In contrast, the Apple Store located in Saket, New Delhi, does have some units available, but customers are facing a waiting period of approximately 2 to 3 weeks if they choose to order online. Retailers in the Delhi NCR region indicate that while some stock remains, the numbers are diminishing rapidly. Reports suggest that the supply issues began following recent price adjustments in Japan, exacerbating the situation in India.

Kailash Lakhyani, the Founder Chairman of the All India Mobile Retailers Association, confirmed the ongoing shortage, indicating that it could extend for an additional period. Meanwhile, claims regarding hoarding of existing stock by some dealers have surfaced, although Lakhyani dismissed these as unfounded, explaining that there is no financial incentive for retailers to hold onto their remaining inventory.

Anticipated Price Increase for the iPhone 17

According to various industry sources, an increase in the price of the iPhone 17 is imminent, possibly occurring as soon as the beginning of August. Tipster Abhishek Yadav noted on X that Apple has informed its iPlanet dealers about a prospective price hike, indicating that the standard model could begin at Rs 94,990, up from its original price of Rs 82,990. This would reflect a significant rise of Rs 12,000. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are also expected to see similar adjustments.

Retailers are speculating that the planned price increase may coincide with the arrival of new stock, leading to expectations of higher price points for models that are currently sold at older prices. Estimates suggest the iPhone 17 Pro could climb between Rs 15,000 and Rs 30,000 above its launch price of Rs 1,34,900, with the Pro Max potentially facing a similar increase from Rs 1,49,900.

Despite the ongoing discussions regarding potential price hikes, Apple has not publicly addressed the stock issues in India. The online store continues to list the latest iPhones at their original prices, although the estimated delivery times have extended significantly.

Wider Implications for the Smartphone Market

The broader smartphone industry is currently experiencing a price correction phase, influenced by rising component costs driven by heightened demand from sectors such as artificial intelligence. As a result, many smartphone manufacturers have raised their prices in recent months or phased out older models in favour of new iterations that come with higher price tags and similar specifications. Apple has notably been among the few companies that have so far refrained from implementing price increases on its devices.

Experts from organisations like Counterpoint Research are suggesting that a price adjustment from Apple seems inevitable, though specific timing remains uncertain. They have noted that markets like India, which face currency challenges, may see pricing reflect broader inflationary trends. Market analysts suggest that the range of anticipated hikes falls between 8 to 12 per cent, with some positing that further increases could be on the horizon as supply constraints persist.

Overall, the current environment in the smartphone market indicates that consumers and retailers alike should prepare for ongoing volatility regarding pricing and availability as various market pressures continue to unfold.
