Indian Visa Centres in Bangladesh Experience Surge in Applications

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent resumption of tourist visas by India has led to a significant influx of applications at its visa centres in Bangladesh. Over a span of just 24 hours, these centres reportedly received more than 1.40 lakh applications. This surge indicates a strong demand from Bangladeshis eager to travel to India, demonstrating the country’s continued appeal despite recent tensions in diplomatic relations.

The Indian High Commissioner, Dinesh Trivedi, announced the reinstatement of tourist visa services on June 28, 2026, following a two-year hiatus due to strained diplomatic ties. The announcement was met with massive queues forming outside the five operational visa centres located in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet, and Khulna. The geographical proximity of India to Bangladesh, coupled with significant cultural and economic connections, plays a crucial role in this overwhelming response.

Historical Context of India-Bangladesh Relations

The relationship between India and Bangladesh has faced challenges, particularly following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 amid widespread student-led protests. These events culminated in attacks on Indian visa centres in Bangladesh and a freeze on tourist visa processing. While medical visas continued to be issued under restricted conditions, the overall diplomatic climate soured, leading to a significant decline in travel between the two nations.

With an interim leadership under Muhammad Yunus, anti-India sentiments reportedly grew, particularly following incidents like a mob’s march towards the Indian embassy in December 2025. More recently, the new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman seeks to stabilise these relations, although challenges such as illegal immigration and resource-sharing disputes persist.

The resumption of tourist visas comes at a critical time for many Bangladeshis who often look to India for accessible healthcare, shopping, and family visits. Despite the tumultuous backdrop, these practical reasons underpin the strong demand for travel to India.

Impact on Bangladeshi Society and Economy

The substantial queues seen outside the Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka’s Jamuna Future Park are indicative of the pent-up demand for travel. Many Bangladeshis are seeking to utilise tourist visas as an alternative means to access medical services, especially given the limitations surrounding medical visa availability. This situation reveals a broader reliance on Indian medical facilities, with many Bangladeshis opting for specialised treatments available in cities like Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai.

The geographical advantage of India—along with the cultural similarities and the presence of Bengali-speaking professionals—makes it a favourable destination for many. The struggles faced by individuals like Shafiqul, who reported facing delays and challenges in obtaining medical visas, further highlight the importance of resuming tourist visa services.

Moreover, the reopening of tourist visa services provides a boost not only to travellers but also to the business sectors in both India and Bangladesh. Kolkata, once bustling with Bangladeshi tourists, experienced economic downturns due to the cessation of travel. The resurgence of visitors is expected to reinvigorate local businesses, particularly those related to hospitality and travel services.

While the visa situation remains dynamic, the strong and continuing ties between the people of India and Bangladesh reflect a complex but enduring connection. Despite political strains, the appeal of India as a destination for healthcare and personal visits remains robust among the Bangladeshi populace.
