Pooja Jha: Indian Diplomat Who Challenged Incorrect Map of Jammu and Kashmir

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pooja Kumari Jha, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, recently made headlines when she objected to an incorrect depiction of the Indian map during a seminar at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in Dhaka. While a presentation was being delivered by former Bangladeshi diplomat Ahmed Tariq Karim, a map was shown that inaccurately placed Jammu and Kashmir on the Pakistani side. In response, Jha asserted that “Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India,” thereby reiterating India’s official stance on the matter.

The seminar, attended by several diplomats and dignitaries, notably included Shama Obaed, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, who served as chief guest. Jha’s timely intervention has sparked considerable discussion on social media, with many Indian citizens expressing their admiration for her commitment to defending India’s sovereignty while representing the country abroad.

Background of Pooja Jha

Pooja Kumari Jha is a member of the Indian Foreign Service from the 2022 batch, currently serving as the Second Secretary (Political and Information) at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. She successfully passed the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2021 on her first attempt, achieving an All India Rank (AIR) of 82. Originally from Puranhiya village in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, her family has since relocated to Delhi. Jha’s father has worked for nearly four decades as an office helper at a private company in Gurugram, while her mother is a homemaker.

Despite facing financial challenges, Jha’s parents prioritised education, ensuring that all their children had access to schooling. Pooja is the fifth daughter in her family and has a younger brother. In her reflections following her UPSC accomplishment, she mentioned that societal norms often placed greater value on sons than daughters. Acknowledging the difficulties in changing such perspectives, she emphasized her commitment to challenging societal biases through her educational and professional achievements.

Pooja’s academic journey reflects her resilience. Due to financial constraints, she and her siblings transitioned from private to government and MCD schools. Despite limited resources, she consistently excelled and credits her achievements with motivating her to aspire for greater accomplishments.

Addressing Gender Inequality and Inspiring Others

Pooja Kumari Jha has openly shared her experiences with gender inequality, noting how they have affected her perspective and strengthened the bond among her sisters. The discussions they had about these issues fostered an environment of support and motivation. Through her education and accomplishments, Jha aims to provide a counter-narrative to societal norms that undervalue women.

The incident involving Jha’s objection to the erroneous map during the seminar has underscored India’s unwavering commitment to its territorial integrity. Her initiative to speak out has not only contributed to this discourse but has also inspired many, particularly young women, to pursue their goals in the face of social and financial hurdles.

Jha’s actions and her journey continue to resonate with many, serving as a reminder of the importance of standing firm on issues of sovereignty and asserting one’s beliefs. Her role as a diplomat exemplifies the growing representation of women in significant positions within the Indian bureaucratic landscape, which remains vital for shaping future generations.
