India is poised to broaden its visa operations in Bangladesh in response to a significant surge in demand following the resumption of tourist visas after a two-year suspension. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka expressed appreciation for the positive response from individuals eager to travel to India for various purposes. The High Commission stated that it focuses on refining the visa application process for the convenience of applicants.

In a statement issued on its official Facebook page, the High Commission affirmed its commitment to strengthening ties between Bangladesh and India. The initiative aims to enhance people-to-people connections and promote friendship between the two nations. The announcement has been met with enthusiasm by various sectors in Bangladesh.

Prominent figures from the business community have indicated that improved visa services will significantly benefit trade, tourism, and medical travel between the two countries. With the reinstatement of tourist visas, Indian Visa Application Centres (IVACs) in Bangladesh have witnessed increased activity, especially in the capital, Dhaka.

Reactions From Bangladesh’s Business Community

The announcement of expanded visa operations has garnered positive feedback from business leaders in Bangladesh. Ashraful Haq Chowdhury, President of the Saudi Arabia-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted that closer ties between the two countries are essential for growth in various sectors, including business and tourism.

Chowdhury echoed the sentiment that enhanced rail and air connectivity would further facilitate exchanges between Bangladesh and India. He expressed optimism that the deepening of relationships would lead to increased trade and investment opportunities. His remarks highlight a collective expectation for a more robust partnership moving forward.

The resumption of tourist visas marks a pivotal moment for individuals in Bangladesh who have eagerly awaited the reopening of travel channels. Many applicants have expressed their satisfaction with the Indian High Commission’s efforts to streamline the visa acquisition process.

Background And Current Situation

The Indian High Commission’s plans to expand visa services come in the wake of the resumption of tourist visas on June 28, 2026, as announced by High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi. This reopening followed an extended closure, which had lasted nearly two years, due to various restrictions. Trivedi presented his credentials to the President of Bangladesh shortly before making the announcement regarding the visa resumption.

Following disturbances that occurred on August 5, 2024, when the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhanmondi was attacked and several IVACs were compromised, the Indian High Commission had initially scaled back its operations. Despite these challenges, it continued to issue more than 1,500 visas daily across all categories, prioritising medical and emergency cases.

The commitment to providing humanitarian assistance remains strong, as the Indian High Commission has facilitated individuals seeking medical treatment in India. The operational IVACs include locations in Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, and Rajshahi, ensuring access to visas for those with urgent needs.
