Indian Railways to Launch Enhanced Reservation System Starting August

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Railways is set to implement a major upgrade of its railway reservation system, marking one of the most significant changes in decades. The new Passenger Reservation System (PRS) will be gradually introduced starting in August, replacing an existing platform that has been operational since 1986. This initiative seeks to enhance the ticket booking process, expand system capacity, and improve overall passenger experience. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a progress review at Rail Bhawan, where he instructed officials to ensure a smooth transition for passengers during this upgrade. The meeting also included participants such as Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu.

Modernization of an Outdated System

The current PRS, in place since 1986, has undergone only limited updates over the years. The new system has been developed with modern technology, providing a significantly increased capacity to accommodate the rising demand for online ticket bookings. Indian Railways introduced internet-based ticketing in 2002, and today, the majority of passengers prefer making reservations online rather than visiting physical counters. Presently, approximately 88 percent of ticket bookings are conducted via digital platforms, reflecting a significant shift in passenger behavior.

Rapid Growth of the RailOne App

This system upgrade is part of a broader digital initiative by Indian Railways. The RailOne app, launched in July 2025, has gained popularity since its inception, amassing over 3.5 crore downloads within less than a year. This application provides a comprehensive platform for passengers, enabling them to book and cancel tickets, check real-time train status, obtain platform and coach information, file complaints, and access various railway services seamlessly. According to the latest data, around 9.29 lakh tickets are booked each day through this app, which includes approximately 7.2 lakh unreserved tickets and 2.09 lakh reserved tickets.

AI Integration for Ticket Confirmation

Among the innovative features being integrated into the upgraded system is an AI-based tool for waitlist prediction. This feature, introduced earlier this year, enables passengers to estimate the probability of their waitlisted tickets being confirmed. The prediction accuracy has seen a substantial increase, improving from 53 percent to 94 percent. This enhancement facilitates better journey planning for travelers, as they can make more informed decisions regarding ticket purchases.

Goals for Enhanced Efficiency

With the new Passenger Reservation System expected to launch in August, Indian Railways is aiming to streamline the train ticket booking process, making it faster, more intuitive, and increasingly reliable for millions of users across the country. The comprehensive upgrade reflects the Railway’s commitment to modernizing its services and adapting to the evolving needs of its passengers.
