Indian Railways Approves 54 Km Kiul-Jhajha Third Line Project at Rs 962 Crore

The CSR Journal Magazine

The approval of the Kiul-Jhajha Third Line Project, spanning 54 km and costing Rs 962 crore, reinforces Indian Railways’ commitment to expanding capacity on the critical Howrah-Delhi route. This initiative aims to boost operational efficiency and facilitate seamless rail transport for both passengers and freight. The project is part of the High Traffic Density Network, which is integral for maintaining and improving railway services across Eastern and Northern India.

Benefits for Passenger and Freight Movement

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the new line will considerably increase the capacity of the already heavily-used corridor, thus enhancing punctuality and operational flexibility for train services. The additional line is expected to allow for smoother movement of both passenger and freight trains, which is crucial for the region’s industrial growth and trade connectivity.

Currently, the existing double line section between Kiul and Jhajha operates beyond its optimal capacity. As demand for traffic on this corridor is anticipated to rise, the necessity for improved infrastructure becomes evident. The introduction of this third line project is expected to alleviate congestion and streamline the movement of trains, thereby enhancing service reliability.

This project will also bolster connectivity between Patna and Kolkata and support the movement of goods associated with various major industrial and logistics hubs in Northern and Eastern India. This is particularly important given that the route links significant economic zones and facilitates trade across regional borders.

Connection to Key Industrial Hubs

The Kiul-Jhajha route provides essential connectivity between the ports of Kolkata and Haldia, and the border point at Raxaul leading to Nepal. It plays a crucial role in handling substantial freight traffic related to key industrial establishments, such as the Barh Super Thermal Power Project, Jawahar Super Thermal Power Project, and Birganj Inland Container Depot.

The Indian Railways has identified this section as part of its High Traffic Density Network Corridor, emphasising its significance in the national transport framework. As the demand for traffic on this corridor continues to rise, the project is set to offer long-term infrastructure support, particularly benefiting the movement of both passengers and freight operations.

The proposed enhancements in connectivity and carrying capacity will lead to more efficient logistics operations, reduction of congestion, and improved reliability of rail transport. This is expected to have a positive impact on the transportation landscape between key economic centres in the regions of Eastern and Northern India.
