Indian Railways has sanctioned an expansion worth Rs 362 crore for the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system. This initiative aims to enhance railway safety across significant routes in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. The project will cover approximately 1,478 route kilometres under the Northern Railway.

The expansion is part of a broader strategy to modernise railway infrastructure while simultaneously reducing the risk of accidents. Railway officials indicated that the rollout of the Kavach system will occur on various sections of the Firozpur and Jammu railway divisions, reinforcing the commitment to improving safety measures nationwide.

Functionality of the Kavach System

The Kavach system is designed to avert accidents primarily caused by human error. Its technology can autonomously apply the brakes in scenarios where a train driver either overlooks a signal or when there is a potential for collision. The system is also capable of monitoring for overspeeding, thus enhancing operational safety during difficult weather conditions, such as fog.

Officials from the railway ministry stated that the Kavach system protects against critical situations, including Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) incidents, head-on collisions, and rear-end crashes. In addition, it is expected to improve the overall operational reliability and punctuality of trains, particularly on busy routes.

With the implementation of Kavach, there is a strong likelihood of achieving better performance metrics across railway operations, elevating the standards for safety and efficiency throughout the network.

Details of Specific Railway Divisions Affected

The installation of Kavach will encompass around 1,012 route kilometres within the remaining portions of the Firozpur Division, estimated to cost approximately Rs 241 crore. Moreover, in the Jammu Division, the system will cover an additional 466 route kilometres, with costs approaching Rs 121 crore.

The approved routes include critical connections such as Jalandhar City Junction to Jammu Tawi and from Jalandhar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, as well as Batala Junction to Pathankot Junction, and the Banihal to Baramulla routes. The Jammu railway division has recently become operational under Northern Railway, significantly enhancing rail connectivity in the region.

By rolling out Kavach in these divisions, officials aim to ensure that safety standards keep pace with the increasing rail services in Jammu and Kashmir, contributing to improved travel efficiency and passenger security.

Commitment to Railway Safety and Modernisation

The expansion of the Kavach system aligns with the government’s overarching agenda of modernising the railway network. Indian Railways has been systematically introducing the Kavach system across various zones to bolster passenger security and lessen reliance on manual operations.

In addition to the Kavach expansion, the government’s modernisation agenda encompasses station redevelopment, increased electrification, and updated signalling systems. As rail connectivity progresses in Jammu and Kashmir, initiatives like the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, which operates on the USBRL corridor, will significantly benefit from these technological advancements.

The latest approval signifies a strategic move towards creating a more robust and reliable railway network, ensuring that safety remains a priority as rail operations expand in this vital region.
