Thousands of mourners attended a mass funeral in Gaza City on August 4, 2026, for 112 Palestinians who had remained trapped under rubble for almost three years following an Israeli attack. The individuals were part of the Abu Sharia and al-Hasayna families, whose bodies were recovered from the debris of their homes in the aftermath of the November 22, 2023, offensive in the Sabra neighbourhood.

Rescue teams managed to recover the bodies, allowing the affected families to conduct funeral prayers and inter the remains. Palestinian officials reported that the earlier attack resulted in the deaths of 308 individuals from these families, which included 40 children, 30 women, and seven persons with disabilities. Currently, about 157 individuals are still reported missing beneath the rubble or unaccounted for.

The funeral procession was marked by rows of coffins draped in Palestinian flags. Mourners displayed large banners bearing photographs of the deceased, alongside calls to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza that commenced in October 2023.

Significance of the Funeral

The Palestinian Civil Defence characterised the event as one of the largest funerals in Gaza since the onset of the conflict. Spokesperson Mahmoud Basal noted on social media that the scale of the funeral illustrated the immense human losses experienced by families, who have faced prolonged delays in laying their loved ones to rest.

Palestinian researchers, activists, and human rights advocates expressed their sorrow over the event, viewing it as a reflection of the struggle faced by families still searching for their kin buried in the ruins. Mustafa Barghouti, who serves as the secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, claimed this gathering could be “the largest funeral in Palestinian history.”

Researcher Mahmoud Hamed al-Aila remarked on the emotional weight of such recoveries, stating that Gaza was “extracting the bodies of its children from under the rubble.” Meanwhile, activist Mohammed Haniyah pointed out that numerous bodies have either decomposed or are still unaccounted for.

Calls for Action and Ongoing Losses

Activist Ali Abo Rezeq articulated that the memorial turned “massacre statistics into coffins and shrouds,” noting that some families were compelled to search through the ruins by hand due to a lack of heavy machinery. Online commentators highlighted the significance of the funeral, portraying it as a potent reminder of the devastation caused by the ongoing conflict.

Ramy Abdu, chairman of the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, indicated that approximately 200 members of the Abu Sharia family are still believed to be beneath the rubble, with concern that their remains may have decayed beyond recognition. This tragic event underscored the plight of thousands of families in Gaza still anticipating the recovery of their missing relatives.

The funeral took place against a backdrop of continued Israeli military actions, despite a supposed ceasefire agreement established in October. Reports indicate that ongoing strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 1,250 Palestinians and injuries to over 4,110 others.

Ultimately, the Assembly of Palestinian Clans and Families urged the Western-backed Board of Peace to expedite efforts to recover the remains of those still trapped, clear debris, and facilitate the reconstruction of Gaza. While the burial of 112 individuals may have offered closure to some families, the search for many others remains tragically unresolved.
