The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Vietnam have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding maritime cooperation and capacity building, with the two countries holding the second Joint Working Group meeting on hydrographic cooperation in Dehradun from June 10 to 12.

The meeting, hosted at the National Hydrographic Office, was co-chaired by Rear Admiral Nguyen Thien Quan, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Vietnam People’s Navy, and Rear Admiral Peush Pawsey, Joint Chief Hydrographer of India. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in hydrography and enhancing technical capabilities under the broader framework of the India-Vietnam Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Senior Naval Officials Lead Deliberations

The development was announced by the Embassy of India in Vietnam through a post on X, which highlighted the participation of senior naval officials from both countries. The meeting brought together representatives involved in hydrographic cooperation and maritime affairs to review ongoing collaboration and explore opportunities for deeper engagement.

Hydrography plays a critical role in maritime navigation, charting, and ensuring safe and secure movement at sea. Cooperation in the field is increasingly seen as an important component of wider defence and maritime partnerships.

The three-day meeting in Dehradun marked the second edition of the Joint Working Group mechanism established between India and Vietnam, reflecting the growing strategic convergence between the two nations.

Focus On Capacity Building And Maritime Collaboration

According to the Indian embassy, both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation through enhanced collaboration in hydrography and capacity building.

“We are committed to strengthening maritime cooperation and advancing the India-Vietnam Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through deeper collaboration in hydrography and capacity building,” the embassy said in its post.

India and Vietnam have steadily expanded their defence and security engagement in recent years, with maritime cooperation emerging as a key pillar of the relationship. The two countries share common interests in ensuring a secure and stable Indo-Pacific region and have increased cooperation in areas ranging from naval exchanges and training to defence technology and maritime domain awareness.

Growing Strategic Partnership

The latest meeting underscores the continued momentum in India-Vietnam ties and highlights the importance both countries place on strengthening institutional mechanisms for cooperation.

The India-Vietnam Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has witnessed significant progress across sectors, including defence, trade, connectivity and people-to-people exchanges. Hydrographic cooperation and technical capacity building are expected to further reinforce maritime ties and contribute to closer strategic coordination between New Delhi and Hanoi.

The successful conclusion of the second Joint Working Group meeting in Dehradun signals the shared intent of both countries to broaden their engagement and deepen collaboration in areas vital to maritime security and regional stability.
