India and US Trade Agreement Expected to Be Finalised Soon

The CSR Journal Magazine

The US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, has expressed optimism that the trade agreement between India and the United States could be concluded in the near future, potentially within weeks. He identified the relationship between the two nations as pivotal in the 21st century, characterised by increasing collaboration in technology, strategic trust, and economic interaction. Speaking at an event hosted at IIT Delhi, Gor referred to India as “our trusted partner” and underscored the significant potential for enhancing bilateral ties.

During his speech, Gor noted the unique positioning of the India-US partnership in seizing new opportunities, particularly in emerging technologies. He reiterated the trust that both nations have in each other, stating, “The US trusts India, which is our partner. And we trust your government.” This sentiment reflects a desire to foster a more seamless economic partnership between the two countries.

Currently, negotiations for an interim trade deal are ongoing, with a US delegation scheduled to visit India next month to discuss the finalisation of the agreement. While both countries appear to be moving closer to a consensus, tensions have persisted, particularly concerning tariff policies and market access, issues highlighted by the previous US administration.

TRUST Initiative Highlights Depth of Cooperation

The recent launch of the US-India TRUST initiative was also a focal point of Gor’s comments during the IIT Delhi event. This programme, aimed at enhancing strategic technological collaboration, was introduced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington last year. Gor noted that this initiative exemplifies the substantial trust developed between India and the US, a relationship that is not as readily available with all countries globally.

Gor indicated that the TRUST (Transforming the Relationship Utilising Strategic Technology) initiative would focus on reinforcing critical supply chains while fostering collaboration among governments, academia, and the private sector in advanced technologies. He acknowledged that the US was adjusting its export control policies to further facilitate cooperation with India specifically in sensitive high-technology sectors.

This growing trust is evident across various industries, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and space exploration. Gor mentioned the anticipated establishment of AI data centres in India with American investments, as well as increasing bilateral investments between Indian and US firms.

Pharmaceutical Sector and Strategic Alliances Discussed

On the topic of pharmaceuticals, Gor highlighted that nearly 40 per cent of the US’s pharmaceutical supplies are imported from India, showcasing the confidence that the US has in Indian manufacturing capabilities. He noted significant Indian investments in the US, amounting to approximately USD 20.5 billion, primarily within the pharmaceutical sector. Ongoing discussions within a US pharma task force regarding supply chain issues related to India are also taking shape.

Gor elaborated on strategic partnerships, referencing the collaboration between NASA and India’s ISRO. He emphasised that the US typically collaborates closely with trusted partners in significant sectors, of which India is a key participant. The ambassador portrayed India as a vital counterbalance to China’s influence in the region, noting the remarkable growth of the bilateral trade relationship, which has surged from approximately USD 20 billion to nearly USD 220 billion over the years.

Highlighting the importance of educational and research institutions, Gor stressed that partnerships at institutions like IIT Delhi are instrumental in laying the groundwork for the next phase of the India-US relationship. He called for enhanced collaborative research projects and broader participation from graduate students to address issues of mutual interest.
