The CSR Journal Magazine

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Thursday said India and Russia share a “special bond” that has stood the test of time, underlining that the two countries’ strategic partnership has grown stronger over the years and continues to serve their mutual interests.

Speaking at the National Day celebrations of the Russian Federation, Misri said India values its long-standing relationship with Russia and noted that the sustained high level of bilateral exchanges reflects the strength and depth of the partnership.

“India and Russia share a special bond that has withstood the test of time. Our special and privileged strategic partnership has grown stronger over the years and served both our countries well,” he said.

The Foreign Secretary reiterated India’s commitment to working closely with Russia to promote dialogue, strengthen multilateral cooperation and address shared global challenges.

India Awaits Putin’s Visit For BRICS Summit

Looking ahead to the BRICS Leaders Summit scheduled for September 2026, Misri said India was looking forward to welcoming Russian President Vladimir Putin to New Delhi.

He said the summit would provide another important opportunity to advance common objectives and further deepen bilateral cooperation.

Highlighting the broader convergence between the two nations, Misri said India and Russia share a commitment to a multipolar, inclusive and more representative international order.

He noted that such cooperation has become increasingly relevant at a time when the world is grappling with ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainty, supply chain disruptions and rising geopolitical tensions.

Misri also expressed appreciation for Russia’s support in strengthening cooperation across sectors and advancing the BRICS agenda, adding that progress achieved in recent years had created a strong foundation for deeper collaboration in the future.

Bilateral Trade Target Set At USD 100 Billion

Describing India-Russia relations as an “anchor of stability” in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape, the Foreign Secretary said both sides have prioritised strengthening economic cooperation.

He said India and Russia are deepening collaboration in traditional sectors while simultaneously exploring new areas of partnership. Referring to the roadmap laid down by the leadership of both countries, Misri said the two sides have set an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade to USD 100 billion by 2030.

He added that cooperation in defence, civil nuclear energy and the space sector continues to progress satisfactorily.

According to Misri, both countries are also pursuing new connectivity initiatives aimed at unlocking the full potential of economic engagement.

Arctic Cooperation Emerging As New Priority

The Foreign Secretary said expanding cooperation in the Arctic region has emerged as an important priority in the India-Russia partnership.

He noted that these initiatives are expected to further broaden the scope of bilateral engagement and create new opportunities for collaboration.

Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov, who attended the celebrations, congratulated PM Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving Prime Minister.

Extending greetings on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Russian government and the people of Russia, Alipov described PM Modi’s achievement as historic and conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to the Prime Minister and the people of India.

The remarks highlighted the continued warmth in India-Russia relations as both countries prepare for another round of high-level engagement at the BRICS Leaders Summit later this year.
