India Reopens Tourist Visa Applications for Bangladeshi Citizens

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Visa Application Centres (IVACs) in Bangladesh have resumed their operations after remaining closed for nearly two years due to the suspension of tourist visas. This reopening follows the recent announcement by Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi, signalling a positive development for many Bangladeshi citizens wishing to visit India.

In the capital city of Dhaka, numerous applicants were seen queuing outside the IVAC located at Jamuna Future Park. They expressed relief and satisfaction over the reinstatement of tourist visas, which many citizens deem essential for travel and medical purposes. Reports indicate a substantial interest in obtaining visas to explore India again, similar to pre-pandemic times.

Individuals seeking medical treatment are among the prominent groups applying for visas. Notably, many have reported visiting Indian hospitals for their healthcare needs, particularly in cities like Chennai and Kolkata, renowned for their medical facilities. The reopening of tourist visas is expected to facilitate such travel.

High Commission’s Recent Developments and Challenges

Following his appointment, Dinesh Trivedi presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the Bangabhaban on June 28, 2026. This official visit included a ceremonial welcome that notably featured a guard of honour. Following the ceremony, Trivedi visited the IVAC to oversee the commencement of visa processing activities.

The High Commissioner’s visit comes after a challenging period characterised by security concerns, particularly following the attacks on Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh on August 5, 2024. These incidents led to a drastic reduction in the High Commission’s visa operations at the time due to safety issues. Despite the heightened risks, the IVACs in Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, and Rajshahi continued to operate, focusing on humanitarian needs and emergency requests.

The Indian High Commission has been processing over 1,500 visas daily, prioritising medical and emergency cases, ensuring support is accessible to individuals facing urgent health conditions. All applications are managed carefully in light of the prevailing security environment.

Public Response to Visa Resumption

Many applicants reported that the visa application process has been efficient and well-organised, which contrasts with previous experiences prior to the suspension of services. This change has rekindled aspirations of travelling to India for both tourism and essential medical care, marking a gradual return to normalcy following the pandemic-induced restrictions.

The resumption of tourist visas is poised to enhance bilateral relations and facilitate cultural and medical exchanges between India and Bangladesh. As the situation evolves, both countries anticipate that restored travel capabilities will benefit their respective citizens significantly.
