India Protests Pakistan’s Planned Gilgit-Baltistan Polls, Cites Sovereignty Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has formally expressed strong objections to Pakistan’s intention to conduct elections for the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, which it asserts are taking place in territories that are under illegal occupation by Islamabad. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India reiterated its position that the so-called “General Elections” scheduled for June 7 undermine India’s sovereignty over the region.

The MEA labelled the proposed assembly elections as exercises occurring on Indian territory that Pakistan has unlawfully occupied since 1947. This reiteration of India’s stance highlights ongoing tensions relating to territorial disputes between the two countries.

Details of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly

The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly was established in 2009 and comprises 33 seats in total. Among these, 24 are general seats, six are reserved for women, and three seats cater to technocrats and professionals. The MEA emphasised that the assembly’s existence does not confer legitimacy to Pakistan’s control over the region, maintaining that such institutions cannot alter the territorial status.

India maintains that the entirety of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including Gilgit-Baltistan, is an integral part of the country. This assertion stems from the formal accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India, which has been acknowledged as complete and irrevocable since 1947.

Additionally, India has accused Pakistan of attempting to deflect attention from serious issues it faces in the region, such as alleged human rights violations, political suppression, economic exploitation, and the curtailment of fundamental freedoms. India’s MEA stated that any processes initiated by Pakistan in these territories cannot legitimise its claim over them.

Ongoing Tensions Between India and Pakistan

The protest arrives in the context of persistent discord between India and Pakistan regarding Jammu and Kashmir. India has continuously objected to political and economic initiatives undertaken by Pakistan in areas it claims. Notably, a strong response was issued by India on May 26 following remarks regarding Jammu and Kashmir in a joint statement between China and Pakistan, which India deemed unacceptable.

Following the meeting between Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese officials, the joint statement referenced Kashmir and outlined the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a significant project. India promptly countered these references, asserting that Jammu and Kashmir has always been an inalienable part of India.

India’s government has expressed unequivocal disapproval of CPEC projects that traverse Pakistan-occupied territories, viewing them as violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. In reiterating its demand, India insists that Pakistan relinquish all territories it occupies illegally, and that peaceful resolutions should be sought to address the conflict.
