Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has urged the Central Government to announce a dedicated relief package for Assam, which has experienced severe flooding. During a discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha on July 28, 2026, Gogoi highlighted the dire flood situation affecting the state.

He informed the House that the floods have tragically resulted in the loss of 70 lives. With a heavy heart, Gogoi made a passionate appeal for additional assistance from the Centre. His comments came amid ongoing rescue and relief operations in multiple affected areas across Assam.

Gogoi’s appeal underscored the urgency of the situation, drawing attention to the pressing need for support as the state grapples with the aftermath of the disaster.

Response From Assam Government

In response to the flooding, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been personally monitoring the situation. Sarma stated that the state government is operating on a “war footing” to ensure relief is delivered to the affected regions.

On social media platform X, Sarma detailed the measures being undertaken to assist those in need. The government has reportedly reached every affected village, restored power to many regions, and is providing accommodation with adequate food, medical services, and dedicated spaces for children in relief camps.

He indicated that the government’s efforts would be ongoing, with plans for a comprehensive rehabilitation strategy based on public participation, aimed at restoring normalcy in flood-affected areas.

Indian Air Force Involvement

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been actively engaged in rescue operations across the flood-affected areas in Assam and Nagaland. Reportedly, over the past ten days, IAF personnel rescued and safely evacuated 458 individuals stranded due to the floods, while also delivering more than nine tonnes of essential relief supplies.

The IAF emphasised its continued commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, stating that it is working under challenging weather conditions. Coordination with the Indian Army and local civil authorities has been pivotal in providing critical assistance to affected communities.

As per data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 4.45 lakh individuals across six districts are still grappling with the repercussions of the floods. Currently, 631 villages remain submerged, and there are 184 relief camps and distribution centres accommodating nearly 28,700 people who have been displaced.

The ongoing situation highlights the significant impact of natural disasters on vulnerable communities and the necessity for comprehensive government support to mitigate the crisis and facilitate recovery. As relief efforts continue, the state government and relevant agencies are focused on addressing the immediate needs of the affected populations while planning for the long-term rehabilitation of the area.
