India Establishes Two New Space Hubs in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu for Rocket Manufacturing

The Indian Department of Space has announced the establishment of state-supported engineering hubs in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu aimed at transforming the approach of private firms towards rocket and satellite production. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) is overseeing this initiative, which includes the development of shared technical facilities designed to serve as communal testing platforms.

This initiative aims to eliminate the considerable initial capital burdens that typically deter smaller local companies from entering the high-tech commercial sector. By providing access to premium infrastructure on a plug-and-play basis, startups and larger manufacturers can quickly commence operations without the necessity of establishing their own independent testing laboratories.

Located near Ahmedabad, the Khoraj Space Manufacturing Park will concentrate on the assembly of spacecraft and intricate payload systems. These payloads are critical technical instruments found within satellites, including sophisticated cameras and sensors that perform essential functions while in orbit.

The technical facility will be equipped with heavy machinery for structural assembly and electronic validation, ensuring that sensitive satellite components can withstand the harsh electrical and radiation conditions encountered in space. Local authorities have already procured land for this manufacturing cluster, which is expected to attract substantial private sector investments.

Space Vehicles Cluster in Thoothukudi

In Tamil Nadu, Thoothukudi will be home to a distinct Space Vehicles Cluster focused on manufacturing, testing, and integrating comprehensive launch vehicle systems. This facility is strategically situated in proximity to the forthcoming small vehicle launch complex in Kulasekharapatnam, enhancing operational efficiency.

The central government has allocated Rs 100 crore for the establishment of this specialised facility, which will include testing systems designed for vibration and shock. These tests are crucial for simulating the severe shaking that rockets experience during launch.

Additionally, the facility will support thermal vacuum testing, which replicates the extreme cold and zero-pressure conditions of outer space, ensuring that equipment can operate under the most challenging environments. Propulsion validation will also take place here, assessing the reliability of heavy engines and fuel systems prior to flight.

Impact on India’s Space Industry

The creation of these shared testing platforms marks a significant shift in India’s approach to space industry development, moving from a predominantly centralised model towards a more distributed industrial base. This shift allows for a wider range of companies to participate in the space sector, fostering innovation and growth.

Interest in establishing similar manufacturing clusters has emerged from approximately ten other states, indicating a robust enthusiasm for expanding the domestic space industry. This expansion is anticipated to bolster India’s ability to secure a larger share of the global commercial market in space technology.

India’s commitment to enhancing its space manufacturing capabilities reflects a strategic vision for advancement in the high-tech sector, paving the way for future developments and greater participation in international space activities.
