India And Uzbekistan Hold 17th Foreign Office Consultations In New Delhi

The 17th round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Uzbekistan took place in New Delhi on May 13, 2026. This meeting was co-chaired by Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs of India, and Bakhromjon Aloev, the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan. The discussions aimed to explore and evaluate the diverse aspects of bilateral relations.

During the consultations, both sides reviewed a range of topics, including trade and investment, tourism, technological cooperation, innovation, energy, and educational and cultural exchanges. In addition, they addressed various consular matters. This comprehensive approach reflects the ongoing commitment to strengthen ties between the two nations.

Official statements shared on X by Randhir Jaiswal, the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasised the significant points covered during the discussions. The consultations are viewed as an essential platform for enhancing diplomatic and bilateral engagement.

Previous Consultations and Developments

Prior to the recent meeting, the 16th round of the India-Uzbekistan Foreign Office Consultations was held on August 7, 2023, in Tashkent. This round was co-chaired by Sanjay Verma, then Secretary (West), and Bakhromjon Aloev. The previous discussions focused on assessing current relations and strategising for future enhancements.

Key priorities addressed in the 16th consultations included connectivity, trade enhancement, and cooperation within the framework of the India-Central Asia partnership. The Ministry of External Affairs provided insights into the discussions, highlighting their commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation.

During this prior engagement, Secretary (West) also met with Bakhtiyor Saidov, the Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan. Their discussions encompassed strategies to deepen the economic and defence partnership between India and Uzbekistan, marking a significant step in collaborative efforts.

Cultural Initiatives and Conclusion

As part of ongoing cultural diplomacy, a commemorative postal stamp was released during the visit, symbolising India’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The release was a joint effort involving Secretary (West) and Alisher Faizullayev, the Director of Uzbekistan Post. This gesture was warmly acknowledged by Secretary (West), highlighting the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening bilateral relations.

Additionally, to commemorate the conclusion of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, an Indian cultural finale took place at the amphitheatre in Samarkand, featuring performances from the Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Indian Culture, Tashkent, alongside Uzbekistan’s Havaas group. This event not only showcased artistic talents but also served to reinforce the cultural connections between the two nations.

The participation of Secretary (West) as the Chief Guest underscored the importance India places on cultural initiatives and soft power in international relations. Overall, these engagements exemplify the cooperative spirit underscoring India-Uzbekistan relations, setting a positive trajectory for future collaborations.
