India Advocates For Global Financing Reforms And Enhanced Representation Of Global South At UN

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has urged for significant reforms in global financial systems during the General Debate of the 2026 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Forum. The call was made at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, with an emphasis on representing the aspirations of the Global South more effectively in international discussions.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, highlighted that Secretary (West) Sibi George presented India’s national statement at the forum, which focused on the follow-up to financing for development. During this address, he stressed the necessity for a financial system that is fair, inclusive, and development-oriented.

In his statement, Secretary George pointed out the pressing need to address the $4 trillion financing gap for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He identified systemic reforms in international financial institutions, the enhancement of the Global South’s voice, and the establishment of digital public infrastructure as essential steps toward fulfilling global commitments.

UN Security Council Reforms Emphasised by India

In a different session, India reiterated its support for long-overdue reforms of the United Nations Security Council during the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) meeting at the UN. Secretary George conveyed the need for improved representation of the Global South, particularly advocating for a larger permanent membership.

Jaiswal’s post on X indicated that Secretary George’s remarks during the meeting underscored the inadequacy of the current Security Council structure regarding the representation of developing nations. Comparisons were drawn between India’s stance on the proposed reforms and the African model, highlighting a shared perspective on the need for change.

India’s consistent advocacy highlights the ongoing discussions aimed at making the Security Council more representative of diverse voices, especially those from regions most affected by global governance decisions.

India’s Role in UN Peacekeeping Initiatives

India also demonstrated its ongoing engagement with the UN regarding peacekeeping during a high-level meeting between Secretary George and Khaled Khiari, the Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific. The discussion primarily focused on collaboration within UN Peacekeeping efforts.

According to a recent communication from India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, this meeting was productive, covering various topics while placing particular emphasis on India’s significant contributions to peacekeeping missions. India has historically been one of the largest troop-contributing nations to UN operations.

Since 1948, over 275,000 Indian personnel have served under the UN flag, reflecting the country’s longstanding commitment to global peacekeeping initiatives. India’s efforts not only bolster UN peace operations but also reinforce its position and engagement in multilateral fora.

As discussions around financing reforms and Security Council representation continue, India’s diplomatic efforts underscore the country’s proactive stance on international cooperation and its role in shaping a more equitable global financial and political landscape.
