The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences of three well-known restaurants in Mumbai due to significant hygiene and food safety violations. This decision came after inspections conducted on July 13, which uncovered alarming lapses at these establishments.

The restaurants affected are Shalimar and Noor Mohammadi in Bhendi Bazaar, as well as Rahmania Restaurant in Umarkhadi. The action follows a pattern of heightened scrutiny of food safety in Mumbai, especially after a recent incident where the K Rustom ice cream parlour was temporarily closed for similar concerns.

Findings of the Inspections

Inspectors also noted the absence of proper drinking water testing and open windows that lacked insect screens, which could allow pests to enter the premises. These lapses are considered serious breaches of food safety regulations according to the stipulations of the FDA.

Noor Mohammadi faced similar scrutiny, revealing thick deposits of black oil on kitchen floors, particularly in the kebab section. Inspectors also identified issues such as unclean utensils, open windows facilitating the entry of insects, and a lack of proper testing records for drinking water. This accumulation of dirt and disorganisation raises concerns regarding the safety of food being served to customers.

Regulatory Actions and Future Implications

Rahmania Restaurant also exhibited a series of violations, including poor food storage practices and rusting kitchen implements. Further, peeling paint and plaster were observed on surfaces, as were missing food and water testing documentation. These compounded issues led to the immediate suspension of the restaurant’s licence.

The FDA has issued a strong warning that it will intensify enforcement actions against any food establishments that fail to adhere to safety regulations or jeopardise consumer health. The regulatory body is committed to ensuring that food safety standards are upheld and violations are addressed promptly to protect the public.
