IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Delhi-NCR in Coming Hours

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rain in Delhi and its adjoining areas. This alert was announced at 12:19 pm on Tuesday, July 7, indicating that residents should prepare for not only rain but also thunderstorms and lightning in the coming hours. The forecast suggests that places such as Loni Dehat, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida, Faridabad, and Ballabhgarh are expected to experience these showers.

Expected Weather Conditions

The forecast indicates typical monsoon weather, with light to moderate rainfall and the possibility of occasional thunderstorms. These storms may develop when warm, moist air rises rapidly, cools, and forms clouds capable of producing rain and lightning. While a heavy downpour is not anticipated this time, brief bursts of rain combined with gentle winds may provide relief from the prevailing humidity in the region.

This warning follows a period of extremely humid weather in Delhi, where temperatures have been around 38°C. The rainfall is viewed as a welcome change from the oppressive heat that has characterised recent days.

In addition to the NCR, regions in Haryana including Kaithal, Rohtak, and Sonipat, along with several districts in western Uttar Pradesh such as Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, and Bulandshahr, are also forecasted to receive rain within the next few hours.

Recent Monsoon Developments

This round of rain follows the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Delhi on July 2, which was five days later than the customary date of June 27. This late arrival marked the end of a prolonged period of heat and humidity, providing a much-needed respite. Rainfall has successfully lowered temperatures across the region to around 30°C in certain areas, bringing relief after recent high temperatures.

Despite active monsoon conditions in north India, these episodes have often been brief rather than sustained over extended periods. Earlier this week, significant rainfall and thunderstorms were reported in multiple NCR areas, which resulted in temperature reductions and provided much-needed comfort amidst the prevailing conditions.

The IMD’s outlook for July 2026 indicates below-normal rainfall across the country, coming off one of the driest June months on record with significant rainfall deficits noted. The expectations are that conditions are becoming favourable for the monsoon’s further advancement into remaining sections of the Arabian Sea, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, with full coverage projected in the next two to three days.

Moreover, the current season has seen slower-than-usual progress for the southwest monsoon in northwest India. Despite this, Delhi has experienced intermittent rain since the onset of the season, positively impacting air quality and helping to alleviate extreme summer heat, which had previously driven temperatures above 40°C in late June. The IMD has indicated that widespread rainfall is predicted over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from July 7 to 9. This weather pattern reflects broader monsoon behaviour, wherein convergence zones pull moist air from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, leading to cloud formation and rain across the northern plains.
