The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has delayed the start of the registration process for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. Originally set to open on 14 August 2026, the application window will now commence on 27 August 2026. The updated timeline is available on the official GATE 2027 website, gate2027.iitm.ac.in.

Alongside the new registration date, IIT Madras has made modifications to the application process. These modifications include the integration of DigiLocker for document verification and the implementation of live facial recognition to enhance security and streamline the application process for candidates.

Applicants are urged to verify that their DigiLocker accounts are active and linked to the necessary documentation prior to submitting their applications. The GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) will facilitate the application submissions starting from the new date.

Revised Deadlines and Important Dates

The postponement of the registration window has resulted in a shift of key application deadlines. The last day for regular registration without incurring a late fee has been extended from 21 September to 27 September 2026. Candidates who do not meet this deadline will still have the opportunity to apply up to 5 October 2026 with an additional late fee applicable.

According to the modified schedule, the period for application rectification will commence on 14 October and continue until 21 October 2026. The notification regarding the allotment of examination cities is expected to be published on 4 January 2027. However, the dates for the GATE 2027 examination remain unchanged and are scheduled for 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21 February 2027, to be conducted over six days in multiple sessions.

Candidates are encouraged to regularly check the official GATE 2027 portal for updates, including information about the release of admit cards and other examination-related announcements.

Introduction of New Paper in Robotics and Automation

In addition to the registration updates, GATE 2027 will also feature the introduction of a new paper in Robotics and Automation (RA). The examination will cover a total of 30 distinct papers, some of which have undergone revisions in their syllabi and paper codes to reflect current academic standards.

Performance in GATE is used not only for admissions to postgraduate programmes in engineering and related fields at IITs and other higher education institutions but also serves as one of the criteria for recruitment by various public sector organisations. Candidates should note that passing the GATE does not automatically secure admission or a scholarship, nor does it guarantee employment; the ultimate selection is contingent on the specific eligibility and criteria set by the respective institutions or organisations.

As the registration process approaches, related announcements, including updated syllabi, will continue to be published. The community of engineering aspirants is advised to remain informed and prepare accordingly for the upcoming examination cycle.
