“If They Misbehave…”: Trump Says US Could Restart Strikes on Iran

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump stated on May 3 that the United States might consider resuming military strikes against Iran. Speaking to the press while boarding Air Force One in South Florida, Trump mentioned that renewed military action could be a viable option if Iran were to “misbehave” or undertake adversarial actions. He emphasised, “If they do something bad, but right now, we will see. It’s a possibility that could happen, certainly.”

His comments came amid a backdrop of ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran. While he highlighted the option of military action being on the table, Trump underscored a desire for diplomatic engagement as well, suggesting that talks were progressing despite uncertainties surrounding Iran’s leadership.

Additionally, Trump indicated that the US targets Iran’s remaining missile-production capabilities, stating, “Well, I’d like to eliminate it, yeah, I’d like to.” He believes that addressing this issue could prevent Iran from re-establishing its military strength.

Trump Responds to Iran’s Recent Proposal

In the same address, Trump revealed he is currently reviewing a proposal recently submitted by Iran. However, he expressed significant scepticism regarding its potential acceptance, asserting that Tehran has not “paid a big enough price” for its actions over multiple decades. The president shared his thoughts on social media platform Truth Social, noting, “I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable.”

This response followed an inquiry about a 14-point proposal from Iran, which reportedly outlines plans to “end the war” on multiple fronts, including in Lebanon. Trump acknowledged that he had not seen the complete document, stating, “No, I haven’t. I’m looking at it up here,” and added that he would provide updates on the proposal later.

Iran’s proposal comes in response to an earlier initiative from the US that allegedly included a nine-point plan with a proposed two-month timeline for a ceasefire. However, Tehran has reportedly dismissed the idea of any extended interim arrangement, insisting that a final settlement must be reached within 30 days.

Ongoing Tensions and Diplomatic Negotiations

The situation between the US and Iran remains complex, with Trump suggesting that while Tehran is reportedly facing internal turmoil, the prospect of a deal continues to unfold. He commented, “They’re decimated. They’re having a hard time figuring out who their leader is.” Trump alluded to the unrest within the Iranian leadership as further complicating the negotiation process.

Amid this diplomatic backdrop, Trump reiterated his belief that the US has successfully managed its position concerning Iran, asserting, “Doing very well with regard to just about everything, but doing very well with regard to Iran.” He has maintained that while military options are available, the US seeks to ensure a long-term resolution rather than a temporary fix.

As diplomatic efforts proceed, the international community is closely monitoring developments to assess the implications of any potential military action or successful negotiations. The strain in US-Iran relations has broader consequences, influencing regional security dynamics, including stability in the Middle East.
