A significant landslide incident occurred on the Nadukani-Parappanangadi State Highway in Malappuram, Keralam, as a result of heavy rainfall on August 3. The first landslide was succeeded by multiple additional landslides in the same region. These landslides impacted the stretch of road between Edeypalam and Karathodu on the Malappuram-Vengara route, leading to an extensive collapse of a hillside onto the highway.

Substantial amounts of earth, massive trees, and rocks fell onto the roadway, with debris also spilling into the neighbouring Kadalundi River. Emergency services, including police and firefighting teams, were present on-site when a second landslide struck, further complicating the situation. Authorities have declared the affected area hazardous, issuing warnings about the potential for further landslides.

Traffic Disruptions and Local Response

As a result of the landslides, all traffic on this route has been halted. Vehicles heading towards Malappuram are now being redirected via Konompara to ensure safety. The landslide site is located a mere 150 metres from Straight Path International School, raising concerns for local residents and officials alike.

Local inhabitants recalled that a similar landslide happened at this very location in 2019, indicating a pattern that may necessitate long-term interventions. Emergency teams, including the Fire Force and police, continue their efforts to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow.

Authorities are also dealing with the broader impact of the rainy weather affecting the region. Reports indicate that approximately 165 hectares of agricultural land have sustained damage, which has adversely affected about 3,596 farmers. The Chief Minister has directed the Agriculture Department to propose a revised compensation plan for the losses incurred due to the inclement weather.

Casualties and Ongoing Relief Measures

The heavy rain has taken a toll on the state, with the casualty count rising to 15, and seven individuals still unaccounted for, as reported by Chief Minister V D Satheesan. The Chief Minister stated that funeral aid of Rs 10,000 will be provided for the deceased, underlining the government’s response to the tragic losses suffered by families.

As of 9 am, there are reports of 11,018 individuals currently taking refuge in 316 relief camps across Keralam. The latest fatalities include two people in Kottayam’s Poonjar constituency and a child who drowned after falling into a tank at Puthuppally. Two casualties were also reported from Idukki, while one person each died in Vizhinjam and Muthalapozhi. In Malappuram, four fatalities have been confirmed along with one person reported missing, while Kannur has one confirmed death and two missing persons. Kozhikode has also reported one casualty amid these extreme weather conditions.

The government continues to monitor the situation closely, coordinating with local authorities to provide assistance to those affected. The ongoing rainfall poses challenges for both rescue operations and the safe management of displaced individuals in relief camps. The collective response aims to manage the crisis effectively and mitigate further risks in the region.
