Congress Member of Parliament Imran Masood has expressed his support for the recent protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) concerning the alleged leak of the NEET-UG examination paper. In a statement, he mentioned that the withdrawal of FIRs against student protestors in Assam and Bihar highlights an important shift in the political landscape of the country. Masood believes that traditional narratives based on religious divisions have lost their influence over the younger generation.

During his remarks, the MP pointed out that the current atmosphere in India has evolved, making it challenging for political factions to manipulate Gen Z opinions through communal rhetoric. He indicated a growing awareness among young people regarding the implications of such divisive strategies, suggesting that the changing mindset of the youth will not permit attempts to invoke religious sentiments for political gains.

Masood’s comments were made amid the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, where he underscored the importance of addressing the issues faced by students and the need for an effective educational framework.

Congress Leadership Criticises BJP Government’s Educational Policies

Other Congress leaders have also voiced their concerns over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government’s handling of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Congress leader Nana Patole raised questions about the government’s intentions regarding the recent amendments proposed to the legislative framework governing educational integrity.

Patole emphasised that even with the introduction of stricter penalties for examination malpractices, the government has fallen short in enforcing existing laws effectively. He highlighted that provisions already existed for severe punishments, including a 10-year prison sentence, indicating that merely introducing new legislation without proper implementation would not address the root problems of examination fraud and paper leaks.

The Congress leader pointed out a trend of increasing paper leaks in the educational sector under the current administration, calling into question the overall efficacy of the government’s approach to education reform and integrity in examinations.

Call for Constructive Dialogue in Parliament

Mahua Maji, a Member of Parliament from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), echoed Patole’s sentiments and urged the ruling party to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. She asserted that it is crucial for the government to listen to the perspectives of opposition parties, highlighting the necessity of thoughtful deliberation.

Maji expressed her satisfaction regarding the functioning of Parliament, stating her desire for productive discussions that consider diverse viewpoints. She cautioned against the hasty passage of bills without adequate scrutiny, which, according to her, could heighten tensions within the country. The essence of democracy, she articulated, is ensuring that citizens of all backgrounds have the right to live in dignity.

In a related context, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called upon all members to collaborate and foster consensus for the ongoing discussions regarding the aforementioned amendment bill, aiming for a session that promotes constructive dialogue. He encouraged parliamentarians to engage in discussions that collectively send a positive message to the public about the importance of dialogue in legislative proceedings.
