The flood situation in Jorhat district, Assam, has significantly deteriorated as of July 22, with rising water levels submerging four villages in the Alengmora locality. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reported that at least 21 lives have been lost due to the floods in the past 24 hours, raising the overall death toll to 31 across the state.

Health and Emergency Response Efforts Underway

Dr Rajesh Sharma, a Medical Officer, indicated that a collective response is underway to tackle the pressing issue of drinking water access in the region. Health teams are conducting outreach initiatives in affected villages, where they have treated approximately 60 to 70 patients. Emergency medical and transportation teams remain on standby to assist with urgent medical needs, and this operation is expected to continue for one week.

Dr Sharma elaborated on the multi-departmental approach being employed, stating, “We are from the medical department, and there is a Disaster Management department as well. All the village people came today; around 60 to 70 patients were treated. There’s a significant effort to improve drinking water availability.”

Reports from the ASDMA indicate that the flood crisis remains severe, impacting over 5.64 lakh people across 16 districts, including Golaghat, Kamrup, Hojai, and Dibrugarh, among others. Floodwaters have engulfed 24,210.35 hectares of agricultural land and affected 872 villages, revealing the vast extent of the disaster.

Sivasagar District Faces Severe Impacts

Sivasagar district has emerged as the most affected area, with over 3.59 lakh people impacted, followed by Jorhat with 87,662, Charaideo with 72,646, Dibrugarh with 18,615, and Golaghat with 16,799 residents facing hardships due to the floods. Over 1.14 lakh individuals have sought refuge in 273 designated relief camps established by local authorities in response to the crisis.

The Indian Army, Indian Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and local government agencies are all actively engaged in relief and rescue operations in the affected areas. The collaborative efforts aim to assist displaced residents and deliver essential services amid the unfolding crisis.

In a recent operation, NDRF personnel rescued five individuals from flood-affected Seleng Ghat, situated near the Seleng Tea Estate in Jorhat district. This incident followed an alert issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on July 19. The rescue team, led by Inspector K.B. Nath, managed to save a young girl trapped on the roof of her home, along with a man who was swept away by flood currents and three women stranded in rising waters.

Among the rescued individuals, an elderly woman was found in a critical state due to severe hypothermia after extended exposure to the cold floodwaters. The team provided immediate pre-hospital treatment and successfully transported all five victims to a designated relief centre for further medical attention and rehabilitation.
