Father and Son Shot Dead in Baghpat Market, One Attacker Killed by Mob

The CSR Journal Magazine

A brutal attack in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh resulted in the deaths of a trader and his son, Sohanlal Agrawal and Vikas Agrawal. The shooting occurred at approximately 5:50 pm on Tuesday in a bustling market filled with shoppers. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of chaos as three masked gunmen entered their shop and opened fire. The attack unfolded during peak business hours, causing panic among the crowd.

The police have noted that the violence is linked to a long-standing rivalry that dates back more than a decade. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots fired at close range, leading to immediate panic as people attempted to flee or aid the victims.

Deepak Agrawal, Sohanlal’s brother, was present at a nearby shop and quickly rushed outside. In a spontaneous act, local residents attempted to help the injured while others pursued the fleeing attackers through the crowded streets of the market.

Attackers and Subsequent Violence

In the ensuing chaos, one of the attackers, identified as Varun Lohari, was apprehended by local residents. He was found to have sustained a gunshot wound and was subsequently transported to a hospital. Reports indicate that he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The circumstances surrounding his shooting are under investigation, with a mobile phone video allegedly capturing the moments that led to his collapse.

The investigation is focusing on determining whether Varun was shot by someone in the crowd during the pursuit. CCTV footage has documented the entire sequence of events, including the arrival of the assailants and their attack on the victims.

Investigators are working to piece together Varun’s recent activities, including his alleged return to Baghpat, where he reportedly conducted reconnaissance before executing the attack with two accomplices, who remain unaccounted for in the aftermath.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigation

The events have triggered widespread outrage within the local community, prompting traders to shut down their shops in protest. Demonstrators briefly occupied a major road, demanding swift government action against the perpetrators of the crime. The violent nature of the incident has left residents feeling vulnerable and has raised concerns about safety in the market area.

In response to the incident, police have formed ten specialized teams assigned to locate the two accomplices who managed to escape. Investigators are looking into both the murders of Sohanlal and Vikas Agrawal and are also examining the circumstances surrounding Varun Lohari’s death, which adds another layer to the complex case.

Emotionally impacted, the Agrawal family is grappling with the tragedy. Vikas’s marriage occurred only six months ago, and it has been reported that his wife is currently two months pregnant. The community continues to mourn the loss, reflecting on the fragility of life amid violence in their neighbourhood.
