DuckDuckGo Introduces Video Ad Blocking Feature for YouTube

The CSR Journal Magazine

DuckDuckGo has announced a new feature aimed at enhancing user experience by blocking video ads on various platforms, including YouTube. This update presents an alternative for users looking for an ad-free experience without the need for paid subscriptions, such as YouTube Premium, which costs a minimum of Rs 159 per month. With this development, the DuckDuckGo browser seeks to alleviate frustrations caused by disruptive advertisements.

The announcement was made on the social media platform X, where the company tweeted about the implementation of this feature. The message stated, “New Feature Alert: YouTube Ad Blocking. Sick of ads interrupting your videos? Us, too. The DuckDuckGo browser now blocks most video ads, including on YouTube!” This initiative puts DuckDuckGo in a competitive space alongside other browsers like Brave and Opera, which already offer similar functionalities.

How the Ad Blocking Works

According to a blog post by DuckDuckGo, the ad-blocking feature effectively removes advertisements that appear both before and during YouTube videos. This ensures that viewers can enjoy uninterrupted viewing of clips regardless of their length. For users operating on iOS, Windows, and Mac platforms, this feature is enabled by default. However, Android users will have to activate it manually through the browser settings, with plans for a default setting on Android devices in the near future.

The company has stated that to utilise this feature, users must have the most recent version of the DuckDuckGo browser installed. While the introduction of ad blocking might cause a slight increase in buffering time when a video is initially selected, DuckDuckGo has assured that once the video is fully loaded, the viewing experience will be uninterrupted.

DuckDuckGo employs community-driven filter lists from uBlock Origin to facilitate ad blocking. This methodology helps track how advertisements are displayed. Users can toggle the ad-blocking feature on or off at any point from the settings menu, including while watching videos. In addition to the ad-blocking feature, DuckDuckGo has its own video player that promotes watching without any tracking mechanisms.

Potential Challenges Ahead

The implementation of YouTube ad-blocking may draw attention from Google, as the tech giant has consistently opposed ad-blocking practices on its platform. The usage of ad-blockers is generally regarded as a breach of YouTube’s terms of service, and Google frequently updates YouTube to identify or neutralise such tools effectively. As of now, neither Google nor YouTube has publicly issued a response regarding DuckDuckGo’s recent update.

Over the past few years, DuckDuckGo has positioned itself as a viable alternative to Google, emphasising user privacy. The browser also promotes AI-free search results, contrasting with Google’s more AI-integrated approach. Although DuckDuckGo has incorporated optional AI features, its primary focus remains on providing a secure browsing experience.

The new YouTube ad-blocking feature complements DuckDuckGo’s existing privacy functionalities, which include blocking ads based on tracking, managing cookie pop-ups, and enforcing global privacy control by default. This global initiative informs websites not to sell or share users’ personal information, thus further safeguarding their privacy while browsing.
