Dr Anoop Misra’s Daily Meal Plan for Diabetes Management

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dr Anoop Misra highlights the importance of incorporating protein and fibre into breakfast for individuals with diabetes. He advocates for the consumption of eggs as an ideal breakfast choice, recommending that people eat the whole egg unless their healthcare provider advises otherwise. For those who prefer vegetarian options, he suggests oats due to their high fibre content along with besan cheela as a healthier bread alternative.

To further enhance breakfast, Dr Misra encourages adding sprouts or almonds for additional nutritional benefits. He asserts that a moderate amount of milk can also be included, emphasising that these suggestions are suitable for everyone and not just diabetics. He criticises the trend of starting the day with various herbal drinks, suggesting instead that a cup of tea with a little milk and sugar, accompanied by a few almonds, provides an excellent way to kickstart the morning.

Rethink Roti Consumption

Dr Misra addresses a prevalent misconception surrounding the consumption of roti among those with diabetes. He states that it is unnecessary to eliminate roti from meals but rather to modify its ingredients. He recommends a mix of besan, jowar, and bajra with wheat flour to enhance the protein and complex carbohydrate content.

In addition, he introduces a strategy called “preloading” prior to lunch, suggesting that individuals eat two bowls of salad comprising cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, radish, or cabbage 20 minutes before consuming roti and sabzi. This approach, he explains, can slow down sugar absorption and mitigate post-meal spikes in blood sugar levels.

In terms of vegetables, he recommends including bhindi thrice weekly, brinjal twice weekly, and incorporating jackfruit when available, as research indicates these foods may assist in better blood sugar management. For dals, rajma and chickpeas are preferred due to their protein and fibre content. He also cautions against the common practice of avoiding curd, insisting that it should be a regular part of the diet with attention to its fat content.

Moderating Rice in Evening Meals

For dinner, Dr Misra promotes a balanced approach by allowing both rotis and rice in moderation. He prefers brown or parboiled rice due to their lower glycaemic index. Individuals who observe blood sugar spikes after consuming rice are advised to eat protein first, such as three to four spoonfuls of dal or rajma before rice. This method aligns with Japanese research regarding meal sequencing.

Dr Misra asserts that merely changing the order in which foods are consumed can significantly impact blood sugar responses without necessitating the elimination of preferred items from one’s diet. He reinforces that one can maintain the same foods, quantities, and caloric intake while achieving different outcomes simply through their sequence of consumption.

Healthy Snack Options Matter

In the realm of evening snacks, Dr Misra recommends snacks such as roasted makhana, roasted chana, almonds, and pistachios as preferable options to commercial biscuits. Although oat biscuits are available, he expresses a preference for natural snacks, noting that packaged biscuits may contain trans fats which are less favourable.

Dr Misra underlines that managing diabetes should not entail sacrificing the joy of food. He believes that enjoying food is an essential aspect of life and asserts that even sweets can be included on occasion if diabetes is well managed. His recommendation for treats consists of homemade besan or wheat laddus paired with curd, particularly reserved for weekends.

Ultimately, he stresses the importance of enhancing the quality, quantity, and timing of food rather than resorting to extreme diets or starvation, reinforcing that minor modifications in eating habits can lead to effective diabetes management.
