DK Shivakumar Announces Resolution of Minister’s Resignation Crisis

The CSR Journal Magazine

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has confirmed that the resignation crisis involving senior minister Ramalinga Reddy has been resolved. This announcement comes shortly after a late-night meeting aimed at addressing the concerns that led to Reddy’s resignation from the recently formed government. Shivakumar reassured the media, stating, “All problems have been sorted out. The resignation issue is settled.”

Late-Night Talks Resolve Crisis

The Chief Minister engaged in discussions with Reddy for approximately two-and-a-half hours at a private hotel on the night of June 5, 2026, as the Congress leadership sought to persuade him to reconsider his resignation. The meeting extended beyond midnight and included senior Congress leaders along with close associates of Reddy. Emerging from the talks around 1.30 am, Shivakumar expressed his confidence in the resolution of the situation, indicating that it was a family matter that required open communication.

During this exchange, Shivakumar acknowledged Reddy’s grievances, describing them as stemming from miscommunication. He expressed optimism about overcoming the issues at hand, adding, “We have given opportunities to all senior leaders, and we will set everything right.” Shivakumar also highlighted his long-standing friendship with Reddy, dating back to 1980, emphasising unity within the party.

The resignation crisis originated when Reddy exited his role as the Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation, citing dissatisfaction with portfolio allocations. Reddy alleged that he was told on multiple occasions that the Bengaluru Development Department would be assigned to him, including assurances made just before the government’s formation.

Understanding the Trigger Behind Reddy’s Resignation

Reddy’s resignation was prompted by the allocation of the Bengaluru Development Department to senior Congress member Krishna Byre Gowda, leaving the minister disappointed as he had expressed a keen interest in this portfolio. After publicly signing his resignation, Reddy reiterated his prior claims of being assured this position and expressed his dissatisfaction with how events unfolded.

While Reddy’s actions initiated a significant internal challenge for the Congress party, Shivakumar had earlier acknowledged Reddy’s unhappiness and confirmed his commitment to addressing these issues. He noted the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts among party members, reinforcing Reddy’s value as a senior party figure.

Shivakumar attempted to mitigate concerns surrounding the internal discord, stating, “There is nothing to worry about. He is a great friend.” This sentiment aimed to convey a sense of camaraderie and collaborative spirit within the cabinet.

Reddy Signals Acceptance Following Discussions

After their late-night meeting, Reddy’s comments indicated a shift towards reconciliation. When asked about potentially retracting his resignation at Shivakumar’s request, he affirmed the Chief Minister’s statement but refrained from providing further details on his intentions, stating, “Everything has been resolved. That’s all.”

In a broader context, Shivakumar noted that he had received congratulations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi after assuming office, expressing a desire for co-operative politics focused on benefiting the state’s citizens. As the Congress party confronts its first internal challenge soon after forming the government, the resolution of Reddy’s episode offers an opportunity to project unity and stability moving forward.

The swift resolution of this situation underscores the importance of communication within political structures, especially as the newly elected government seeks to establish itself in the state of Karnataka.
