Delhi Woman Dies After Distress Call to Sister in Alleged Dowry Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 28-year-old woman in Delhi reportedly died after making a distress call to her sister, claiming she was being beaten by her husband and in-laws. The victim, identified as Veena, fell from the fourth floor of her marital home in the Indrapuri area on the night of May 18. During the call, which was placed around 9.55 pm, Veena urged her sister Reena to help her and even asked to speak to her father, expressing concern that she might not be able to speak much longer.

Reena alleged that during the call, Veena pleaded, “Save me, didi, they are beating me. Maybe I won’t be able to talk later, so let me speak to Papa too,” before the conversation abruptly ended. According to the sister, Veena also requested that her son be taken care of and not handed over to her in-laws after her death.

The victim’s family attempted to reach her following the call but were unable to get in touch. They claimed that just seven minutes later, as they were heading to Veena’s residence, they received a call from her brother-in-law informing them of her fall from the roof.

Police Investigation and Family’s Statements

Following the emergency call about a woman falling from a building, police teams arrived at the scene and transported Veena to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her body was returned to the family after a postmortem examination at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, and the family’s statements were recorded by the area Sub-Divisional Magistrate.

Veena’s father, Suresh, alleged that despite providing dowry and gifts at her marriage, his daughter faced consistent abuse from her husband and in-laws. The family reportedly accused Veena’s husband of demanding a Royal Enfield motorcycle, while her brother-in-law allegedly mocked her over the dowry items she received, comparing them unfavourably to those of his own wife’s family.

Further allegations from Veena’s younger brother highlighted instances of physical abuse, including a serious incident where Veena’s eardrum was ruptured due to an assault. He stated that Veena had previously refrained from filing complaints out of a desire to safeguard her marriage and family’s reputation.

Allegations and Arrests in the Case

In a heart-wrenching revelation, Veena’s brother mentioned that he also received a distress call from her before her death. On May 18, he recalled her crying and saying, “Save me, they are beating me badly. They will kill me.” This call ended abruptly, only for the family to be informed later by her brother-in-law that she had jumped from the roof.

In contrast, Veena’s father-in-law, Jaipal, denied all accusations related to dowry harassment or physical violence, stating he was in his native village at the time of the incident and only rushed to Delhi upon learning of Veena’s demise.

In light of the allegations, the Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Veena’s husband and two brothers-in-law under anti-dowry laws. So far, Veena’s husband and one brother-in-law have been taken into custody, while the investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
