Delhi Receives Overnight Showers as Weather Office Warns of Hailstorms and Thunderstorms

The CSR Journal Magazine

Several parts of the national capital witnessed heavy rainfall late Wednesday night, with showers continuing past midnight, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of thunderstorms, lightning and strong gusty winds across Delhi and adjoining regions.

The weather office had earlier issued an extremely severe alert, cautioning that intense thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds of 70-90 kmph, gusting up to 100 kmph, moderate to heavy rainfall and hail could affect parts of Delhi over a three-hour period.

The overnight spell brought relief from the prevailing heat, even as authorities remained on alert over the possibility of severe weather conditions.

More Rain And Thunderstorms Expected On Thursday

According to the IMD, Delhi is expected to experience a generally cloudy sky on Thursday with multiple spells of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.

The weather department said a spell of very light to light rain is likely during the morning and forenoon hours, with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph.

Another round of rain is expected during the afternoon and evening, with similar weather conditions likely to prevail throughout the day.

The IMD forecast indicates that thunderstorms and gusty winds could continue intermittently, keeping temperatures in check across the city.

Hailstorm Alert Issued For Delhi And Neighbouring States

In its latest weather bulletin, the IMD said Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh could witness hailstorms during June 11 and 12.

The alert has also been extended to several parts of north India, where unstable weather conditions are expected to persist.

The weather office attributed the change in conditions to the influence of an active Western Disturbance affecting the region.

Wet Spell Across Northwest India Till June 13

According to the IMD, northwest India is likely to experience a widespread wet spell until June 13 under the impact of the Western Disturbance.

Rainfall activity accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds is expected across several states in the region, providing respite from the intense summer heat.

The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid open areas, trees and vulnerable structures during periods of strong winds and lightning.

With more rain expected over the next 24 hours, Delhi is set to remain under cloudy skies as the monsoon-like conditions continue to influence weather patterns across north India.
