Delhi-NCR Lifts GRAP-1 Restrictions Following Air Quality Improvement

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has revoked the first stage of restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the Delhi-NCR region. This decision comes after a noticeable improvement in the air quality, which is now classified as moderate.

Current Air Quality Status

The air quality index (AQI) for Delhi was recorded at 123 on Friday, categorising it within the ‘moderate’ range, according to CAQM reports. This change is largely attributed to favourable meteorological conditions present in the region.

Furthermore, forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) suggest that the AQI is likely to remain in the moderate category over the next few days. This prediction indicates a continued improvement in air quality levels.

Prior to the revocation, GRAP-1 restrictions, which had been enforced since May 19, included measures aimed at reducing pollution levels in the capital region, specifically concerning the use of certain fuels.

Details of GRAP Stages

The Graded Response Action Plan consists of four distinct stages that correspond to varying AQI readings. GRAP-1 is activated when the AQI falls between 201 and 300; GRAP-2 is put in place for AQI levels between 301 and 400; GRAP-3 is implemented for AQI readings from 401 to 500; and GRAP-4 is invoked when the AQI exceeds 450.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the AQI categories are defined as follows: 0 to 50 is classified as ‘good’, 51 to 100 as ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 as ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 as ‘poor’, 301 to 400 as ‘very poor’, and 401 to 500 as ‘severe’.

The easing of GRAP-1 restrictions allows for the cessation of certain measures, such as the ban on using coal and firewood in tandoors located in hotels, restaurants, and open eateries, as well as limitations on the operation of diesel generators, which had previously been restricted to emergency use only.

Future Outlook on Air Quality

Experts continue to monitor the air quality situation in Delhi-NCR. The recent improvements in AQI readings present a positive indication; however, ongoing assessments are essential to ensure that air quality remains within safe limits.

While the lifting of GRAP-1 restrictions marks a significant development, it is vital to remain vigilant regarding pollution levels, especially as weather conditions can rapidly change. The CAQM emphasises ongoing efforts to improve air quality in the region and will adjust measures accordingly based on future AQI data.

The CAQM’s proactive approach aims to balance public health concerns and the operational needs of businesses in Delhi-NCR. Stakeholders and residents are encouraged to stay informed about air quality updates and recommended practices to help mitigate pollution levels moving forward.
